The local search algorithm WSat is one of the most successful algorithms for solving the satisfiability (SAT) problem. It is notably effective at solving hard Random 3-SAT instances near the so-called ‘satisfiability threshold’, but still shows a peak in search cost near the threshold and large variations in cost over different instances. We make a number of significant contributions to the ana...

A new type of materials, the backbone-thermoresponsive hyperbranched polyether, was successfully synthesized by proton-transfer polymerization of 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl ether and various triols, and the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) values can be readily adjusted from 19.0 to 40.3 degrees C by changing the hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance of BDE and triols.

Despite the importance of local structural detail to a mechanistic understanding of RNA catalysis and binding functions, RNA backbone conformation has been quite recalcitrant to analysis. There are too many variable torsion angles per residue, and their raw empirical distributions are poorly clustered. This study applies quality-filtering techniques (using resolution, crystallographic B factor,...

One promising solution to improve the efficiency of wireless networks is to control the number of nodes involved in multi-hop routing by employing virtual backbone. On the one hand, a virtual backbone becomes more efficient as its size is getting smaller. However, as the size of a virtual backbone is getting smaller, the throughput of the virtual backbone is degraded since the length of a routi...

The preferences of amino acid residues for ,psi backbone angles vary strikingly among the amino acids, as shown by the backbone angle found from the (3)J(H(alpha),H(N)) coupling constant for short peptides in water. New data for the (3)J(H(alpha),H(N)) values of blocked amino acids (dipeptides) are given here. Dipeptides exhibit the full range of coupling constants shown by longer peptides such...

UNLABELLED Graded anisotropy magnetic materials possess a coercive field changing laterally with position. A simple fabrication procedure to produce such an anisotropy gradient in a polycrystalline Au/Co layer system without lateral thickness variation and with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, prototypical for a large variety of thin film systems, is shown. The procedure uses light-ion bombar...

Despite strong anisotropy seen in analysis of seismic data from the NoMelt experiment in 70 Ma Pacific seafloor, a previous analysis of coincident magnetotelluric (MT) data showed no evidence for anisotropy in the electrical conductivity structure of either lithosphere or asthenosphere. We revisit the MT data and use 1D anisotropic models of the lithosphere to demonstrate the limits of acceptab...

Virtual backbone has been proposed as the routing infrastructure to alleviate the broadcasting storm problem in ad hoc networks. Since the nodes in the virtual backbone need to carry other node’s traffic, and node and link failure are inherent in wireless networks, it is desirable that the virtual backbone is fault tolerant. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm called Connecting Dominating...

We use flexible backbone protein design to explore the sequence and structure neighborhoods of naturally occurring proteins. The method samples sequence and structure space in the vicinity of a known sequence and structure by alternately optimizing the sequence for a fixed protein backbone using rotamer based sequence search, and optimizing the backbone for a fixed amino acid sequence using ato...

A granular material is most likely to possess an initial anisotropic structure due to the depositional process or the previous stress history. There is also induced fabric anisotropy during shearing. Concerning the significant influence of fabric anisotropy on the stress-strain behaviour of a granular material, in-depth investigation on the two kinds of fabric anisotropy is essential. Initial f...
