The bandwidth limitations of resonant, electrically small antennas that fully occupy a spherical volume are well defined by the inverse of the Chu-limit or the lower bound on quality factor. Recently, Gustafsson et al developed lower bounds for the Q of antennas of arbitrary shape. We have previously described antenna designs fully occupying a spherical volume and a cylindrical volume that exhi...

We present a new method for algebraic independence results in the context of Mahler’s method. In particular, our method uses the asymptotic behaviour of a Mahler function f(z) as z goes radially to a root of unity to deduce algebraic independence results about the values of f(z) at algebraic numbers. We apply our method to the canonical example of a degree two Mahler function; that is, we apply...

This paper presents the effect of an EBG, Electromagnetic Band-Gap, structure as the ground plane of a PIFA, Planar Inverted-F Antenna. The PIFA is a type of antenna which has been used in many communication applications. It is a medium bandwidth radiator with reduced dimensions. The EBG structures have special electromagnetic properties such as high surface impedance and suppression of propaga...

For a general measure space (Ω, μ), it is shown that for every band M in Lp(μ) there exists a decomposition μ = μ ′ + μ′′ such that M = Lp(μ ′) = {f ∈ Lp(μ); f = 0 μ′′-a.e.}. The theory is illustrated by an example, with an application to absorption semigroups. MSC 2010: 46B42, 28A05, 47D06

Simply mixing layered rare-earth hydroxide colloidal solutions and paratungstate solution at pH > 7 led to directional self-assembly of rare-earth hydroxide nanosheets and paradodecatungstates. These hybrids exhibit efficient energy transfer from the OMCT band to rare-earth ions in the hydroxide layers as well as highly enhanced f-f transitions.

Passive microwave measurements from space are known to be sensitive to the freeze/thaw (F/T) state of the land surface. These measurements are at a coarse spatial resolution (~15–50 km) and the spatial variability of the microwave emissions within a pixel can have important effects on the interpretation of the signal. An L-band ground-based microwave radiometer campaign was conducted in the Can...

Three dimensionally ordered nitrogen-fluorine (N-F) co-doped TiO2 inverse opals (IOs) were fabricated by templating with polystyrene (PS) colloidal photonic crystals (CPCs) by infiltration. During preparation, the TiO2 precursor was treated with a mixture of nitric acid and trifluoroacetic acid to facilitate N-F co-doping into the TiO2 lattice. Enhanced solar light absorption was observed in th...

Master equations for thermal unimolecular reactions and the reverse thermal recombination reactions are solved for a series of model reaction systems and evaluated with respect to broadening factors. It is shown that weak collision center broadening factors F(cent) (wc) can approximately be related to the collision efficiencies β(c) through a relation F(cent) (wc) ≈ max {β(c) (0.14), 0.64(±0.03...
