Regioselective construction of 4,8,9-trioxygenated 2,3-dihydrobenz[f]indenones, key intermediates for the synthesis of kinamycin antibiotics, was achieved via Diels-Alder reactions (DAR) using 4,7-dioxygenated indanone-type compounds as dienophiles. Reaction of indanetrione with 1-methoxybutadiene gave a 1 : 1 mixture of undesired 4,5,9-trioxygenated 2,3-dihydrobenz[f]indenone and [4.4.3]propel...
The poling process of polymers doped with chromophores is of great importance for the nonlinear properties of these materials. So, after having optimized the poling condition the second harmonic generation (SHG) was measured for PMMA polymer doped with Disperse Red 1. The dependence of SHG intensity to the poling voltage and poling temperature have been experimentally studied. The relaxation ...
Electronic energy transfer (EET) between chromophores is of fundamental importance for many biological processes and optoelectronic devices. However, common models fall short in fully describing the process, especially in bichromophoric model systems with a donor and acceptor connected by a rigid linker providing perpendicular geometries. Herein, we report a novel strategy for preparing bichrom...
......Nanoscale devices offer the possibility of a new era in computing. Device sizes at the molecular scale will let computer architects deploy a plethora of devices— creating, for example, million-core designs. Furthermore, because nanoscale devices could contain a significant amount of computational circuitry in an area smaller than a typical biological cell, they could prompt the emergence ...
We review several experimental methodologies for the determination of nonlinear absorption coefficients of organic chromophores in either solution or thin film form. The goal here is to also be able to identify and quantify the nonlinear absorption process or processes, e.g. the essentially instantaneous two-photon absorption (2PA) or the cumulative excited-state absorption (ESA). These methods...
Human skin, especially the epidermis, contains several major solar ultraviolet-radiation- (UVR-) absorbing endogenous chromophores including DNA, urocanic acid, amino acids, melanins and their precursors and metabolites. The lack of solubility of melanins prevents their absorption spectra being defined by routine techniques. Indirect spectroscopic methods show that their spectral properties dep...
A new design of luminescent materials by decorating a tetraphenylethene core with four aromatic chromophores is proposed. The generated luminogens exhibit aggregation-enhanced emission and excellent solid-state fluorescence efficiency (93-99%). Efficient non-doped OLEDs based on them afford remarkable efficiencies up to 11 cd A(-1).
