Constitutive vectors are useful tools for genetic engineering. Two constitutive vectors with high levels of expression and broad host ranges were developed and used in a range of Pseudomonas hosts. The vectors showed superior characteristics compared to the inducible vectors as well as the potential to be used as improved genetic tools for biocatalysis.

Gluconobacter oxydans strain DSM 2003 can efficiently produce some industrially important building blocks, such as (R)-lactic acid and (R)-2-hydroxybutyric acid. Here, we present a 2.94-Mb assembly of its genome sequence, which might provide further insights into the molecular mechanism of its biocatalysis in order to further improve its biotechnological applications.

Cluster model: Large active-site models (see figure) are used to investigate the selectivity of limonene epoxide hydrolase, both the wild type and mutants optimized through directed evolution. Good agreement is found between theory and the experimental data, thus demonstrating that the quantum chemical cluster approach can be a powerful tool in the field of asymmetric biocatalysis.

During the past decade much progress has been made in the fundamental understanding of the phenomena that govern biocatalysis in non-conventional media. The factors that affect biocatalytic reactions and the activity and stability of biocatalysts in these reaction media are generally associated with the crucial role of water and the need to keep biocatalysts in their active conformation. For th...

Antifungal drugs belong to few chemical groups and such low diversity limits the therapeutic choices. The urgent need of innovative options has pushed researchers to search new bioactive molecules. Literature regarding the last 15 years reveals that different research groups have used different approaches to achieve such goal. However, the discovery of molecules with different mechanisms of act...

The goal of incorporating renewable carbon into the fuel and chemical enterprise will most likely be successful when combined systems of biocatalysts and chemical catalysts are exploited. Significant efforts in the biocatalytic release of sugars from biomass are being pursued for subsequent use in fermentation. Two recent papers demonstrate an alternative approach to converting these sugars to ...

Archaeal enzymes are playing an important role in industrial biotechnology. Many representatives of organisms living in "extreme" conditions, the so-called Extremophiles, belong to the archaeal kingdom of life. This paper will review studies carried by the Exeter group and others regarding archaeal enzymes that have important applications in commercial biocatalysis. Some of these biocatalysts a...

Well-defined hierarchically aloe-like gold micro/nanostructures (HAG) are one-step electrochemically fabricated without introducing any template or surfactant. The formation kinetics of the HAG can be described as a nucleation and three-dimensional growth process controlled by the reactant diffusion from the solution side. As the applied electro-deposition potential moved in the negative direct...

In this paper we review recent advances in computational chemistry and specifically focus on the chemical description of heme proteins and synthetic porphyrins that act as both mimics of natural processes and technological uses. These are challenging biochemical systems involved in electron transfer as well as biocatalysis processes. In recent years computational tools have improved considerabl...

Microbial biodegradation of environmental pollutants is a field of growing importance because of its potential use in bioremediation and biocatalysis. We have studied the characteristics of the global biodegradation network that is brought about by all the known chemical reactions that are implicated in this process, regardless of their microbial hosts. This combination produces an efficient an...
