When high quality bismuth or graphite crystals are placed in a magnetic field directed along the c axis (trigonal axis for bismuth) and the temperature is lowered, the resistance increases as it does in an insulator but then saturates. We show that the combination of unusual features specific to semimetals, i.e., low carrier density, small effective mass, high purity, and an equal number of ele...

Forty-five patients taking bismuth subnitrate orally for therapeutic reasons were admitted to hospital with a myoclonic encephalopathy of acute onset. The clinical features were similar, mostly with mental confusion, disorder of walking and standing, dysarthria, and myoclonic jerks. In 31 cases the EEG showed a characteristic pattern, not previously recognised, which assisted differential diagn...

We report a theoretical calculation explaining the quantum Nernst effect observed experimentally in a bismuth single crystal. Generalizing the edge-current picture in two dimensions, we show that the peaks of the Nernst coefficient survive in three dimensions due to a van Hove singularity. We also evaluate the phonon-drag effect on the Nernst coefficient numerically. Our result agrees with the ...

Iron plays an especially important role in human physiological functions and pathological impairments. The superior properties of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and their modification with bismuth and magnetic nanoparticles as developed in this work have led to an extraordinary and novel material to facilitate ultrasensitive detection in the nanomolar range. Here, we present the development of an elec...

This simple, rapid, sensitive, reliable, and economical assay for bismuth in plasma, erythrocytes, and urine is based on atomic absorption spectrophotometry with hydride generation. Acid digestion eliminates the problem of foaming, which hitherto has complicated such assay of bismuth in plasma and erythrocytes. The detection limit of the assay has been improved to 0.1 micrograms/L, as compared ...

A reduced graphene oxide/bismuth (rGO/Bi) composite was synthesized for the first time using a polyol process at a low reaction temperature and with a short reaction time (60 °C and 3 hours, respectively). The as-prepared sample is structured with 20-50 nm diameter bismuth particles distributed on the rGO sheets. The rGO/Bi composite displays a combination of capacitive and battery-like charge ...

Bismuth and antimony are semimetals with a rhombohedral crystal structure and similar lattice parameters. Bi12xSbx alloys exhibit unusual electronic properties and are of interest for thermoelectric and magnetoelectronic devices. In this paper, we show that Bi12xSbx alloys can be electrodeposited from acidic chloride-based solutions and that a homogenous solid solution is obtained across the en...

The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of bismuth subgallate on wound healing. In 40 Wistar rats, two standard wounds (3.5 mm x 2 mm) were made using a biopsy punch on the back of each animal. Test wounds were filled with bismuth subgallate and control wounds with 0.9% saline. At 1, 4, 7, 11 and 18 days, the qualitative evolution of the granulation tissue morphology was observed an...

This study provides the first proof of the novel application of bismuth oxide as a radiosensitiser. It was shown that on the highly radioresistant 9L gliosarcoma cell line, bismuth oxide nanoparticles sensitise to both kilovoltage (kVp) or megavoltage (MV) X-rays radiation. 9L cells were exposed to a concentration of 50μg.mL-1 of nanoparticle before irradiation at 125kVp and 10MV. Sensitisation...
