Objective(s): Electrical inhomogeneity between ischemic and non ischemic myocardium is the basis of arrhythmia which occurs following coronary artery occlusion. The leakage of potassium from the ischemic region to the non ischemic region is very effective in the generation of these arrhythmias. The aim of this study is to research the effect of ATP-dependent potassium (KATP) channel blocker (gl...

A gravimetric method was evaluated as a simple, sensitive, reproducible, low-cost alternative to quantify the extent of brain infarct after occlusion of the medial cerebral artery in rats. In ether-anesthetized rats, the left medial cerebral artery was occluded for 1, 1.5 or 2 h by inserting a 4-0 nylon monofilament suture into the internal carotid artery. Twenty-four hours later, the brains we...

The concept of vascular dementia is undergoing revision. The multi-infarct model and the Alzheimer's model of dementia, usually referred to as 'multi-infarct dementia', are gradually being replaced by a much broader concept of vascular cognitive impairment. This conceptual evolution reflects a more profound understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms that underlie this complex syndrome. As a con...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Vascular disease causes multi-infarct dementia (MID) or Binswanger's disease (BD), the latter of which is a progressive form of vascular dementia (VaD) associated pathologically with fibrinoid and hyaline changes in brain arterioles with injury to the white matter. Clinically, BD patients have long-standing hypertension with disturbances of gait and intellect. Because mat...

The dose-response curve and time window of efficacy for dextrorphan in permanent focal brain ischemia leading to infarction was studied in the rat. With pretreatment, the maximum effective dose of 20 mg/kg reduced the eventual infarct volume by greater than 50%. Delayed drug administration, up to 45 min following permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion, significantly reduced infarct size.

Tau protein concentrations were measured in the CSF of 23 patients with dementia of the Alzheimer type (DAT), 36 patients with multi-infarct dementia (MID), and 23 control subjects. Tau protein concentrations were significantly higher in patients with DAT than in controls (P < 0.001) and patients with MID (P < 0.001). A significantly positive correlation between CSF tau protein and glucose conc...

PURPOSE To evaluate a standardized definition of delayed hyperenhancement in the analysis of contrast-enhanced cardiac magnetic resonance (ceCMR) imaging. PATIENTS AND METHODS CeCMR was performed in 15 patients with chronic ischemic heart disease. Delayed hyperenhancement was analyzed both by visual analysis by an experienced team of observers, and after thresholding the window setting of the...

We used arbitrary point channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2) stimulation and wide-scale voltage sensitive dye (VSD) imaging in mice to map altered cortical connectivity at 1 and 8 weeks after a targeted cortical stroke. Network analysis based on optogenetic stimulation revealed a symmetrical sham network with distinct sensorimotor and association groupings. This symmetry was disrupted after stroke: at 1 w...

Neuropathological features and causes of death are presented in 27 deceased patients belonging to a prospective series of 71 hospitalised patients with primary degenerative dementia. The clinical criteria for primary degenerative dementia used in the present study were accurate enough to exclude patients with multi-infarct dementia. At necropsy, 82% of the cases had neuropathological changes of...
