Brucella suis biovar 2 is the most common biovar isolated from wild boars (Sus scrofa) associated with transmission to outdoor-reared pigs in Europe. We report here the complete and annotated genome sequences of three strains isolated from wild boars in Portugal and Spain and belonging to the Iberian clone (haplotypes 2d and 2e).
The literature on electrophoresis of bacteria is quite voluminous and has been reviewed, among others, by Winslow, Falk and Caulfield (1923-4), Winslow and Upton (1926), Winslow and Fleeson (1925-8), Joffe and Mudd (1934-5), and Abramson (1934). Although a few workers have concerned themselves with studies of this type on Brucella species, apparently there has been no systematic investigation o...
Hepatic abscess due to Brucella species is an extremely rare complication especially in acute illness. Here, we report a case of hepatic microabscesses probably caused by Brucella in a 33-year-old woman with acute infection who was successfully treated with a combination of doxycycline and rifampicin for 3 months.
We report a fatal case of Brucella suis endocarditis initially misdiagnosed by automated identification systems as Ochrobactrum anthropi infection in a patient with a history of Marfan syndrome and recreational feral swine hunting. This report emphasizes the need to consider brucellosis as a part of the differential diagnosis of acute febrile illness, particularly in patients with known risk of...
BACKGROUND The identification of Brucella isolates using conventional microbiological techniques is time-consuming and hazardous. We therefore assessed the performance of real-time PCR assays for the identification of members of the genus Brucella to the genus and species level. METHODS We evaluated an in-house developed assay and various previously published real-time PCR assays targeting bc...
Increased resistance to infection with Brucella abortus 2308 resulted when recombinant murine gamma interferon (rMuIFN-gamma) was given to mice both before and during infection but not when given only before infection. Mice given rMuIFN-gamma had enhanced peritoneal and splenic macrophage bactericidal activity against B. abortus. Treatment of mice with rMuIFN-gamma plus indomethacin did not fur...
Brucella abortus is generally known to cause brucellosis in cattle and buffalo. Here, we report the draft genome sequence of Brucella abortus SKN 13, isolated from aborted cattle placenta in the area of Gujarat, India, providing precious resources for comparative genomic analyses of Brucella field strains.
Brucellosis is a zoonosis occurring worldwide, with economic and public health impacts. Its diagnosis remains a challenge in endemic countries and basically relies on serology. The present study was carried out on two dairy cattle farms allegedly free from brucellosis, but with sporadic cases of abortion. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of Brucella (B.) spp. in uterine dis...
The patterns of susceptibility to hydrophobic and hydrophilic drugs and the uptake of the fluorescent probe N-phenyl-naphthylamine in Brucella spp., Haemophilus influenzae, Escherichia coli, and deep rough Salmonella minnesota mutants were compared. The results show that the outer membranes of smooth and naturally rough Brucella spp. do not represent barriers to hydrophobic permeants and that t...
Brucella suis infection was diagnosed in a man from Tonga, Polynesia, who had butchered swine in Oregon, USA. Although the US commercial swine herd is designated brucellosis-free, exposure history suggested infection from commercial pigs. We used whole-genome sequencing to determine that the man was infected in Tonga, averting a field investigation.
