To develop monoclonal reagents for antigenic analysis and serotyping of Campylobacter spp., hybridoma cell lines were produced by fusion of mouse myeloma cells and spleen cells from mice immunized with Formalin-treated Campylobacter jejuni organisms. An enzyme immunoassay was used for preliminary screening of the cell culture supernatants and ascites. Twenty-nine clones which reacted with the i...

OBJECTIVE This study measured the relationship between lesions suggestive of subclinical pig illness at harvest to carcass contamination and human foodborne risk. METHODS Over the course of eight visits (December 2005 to January 2006), we swabbed 280 randomly selected carcasses, during normal slaughter operations, at three points in the slaughter line: skin pre-scald; the bung or pelvic cavit...

Clinical material collected from various body sites, but excluding faeces, was cultured on either selective or non-selective media for Campylobacter spp. Campylobacter jejuni was found in only two (0.18%) of 1100 specimens; both positive specimens were urine. From these results it is suggested that C jejuni is an uncommon finding in clinical material other than faeces.

The EntericBio system uses a multiplex PCR assay for the simultaneous detection of Campylobacter spp., Salmonella enterica, Shigella spp., and Escherichia coli O157 from feces. It combines overnight broth enrichment with PCR amplification and detection by hybridization. An evaluation of this system was conducted by comparing the results obtained with the system with those obtained by routine cu...

We report the isolation of a novel helicobacter isolated from the caecum of the Siberian hamster (Phodopus sungorus). Sequence analysis showed 97% sequence similarity to Helicobacter ganmani. In addition, we report the co-infection of these Siberian hamsters with a Campylobacter sp. and a second Helicobacter sp. with 99% sequence similarity to Helicobacter sp. flexispira taxon 8 (Helicobacter b...

Introduction The genus Arcobacter (Latin, arc-shaped bacterium) includes bacteria formerly designated Campylobacter cryaerophila (Latin; loving cold and air). They are fastidious, microaerophilic, gram-negative, spiral-shapedbacteria that are motile by means of polar flagella. Arcobacter was first isolated by Ellis et al (6) in 1977 from aborted bovine and later from porcine fetuses. Unlike oth...

The study was conducted to determine the frequency of isolation of Salmonella, Campylobacter and E. coli O157 in the faecal samples of rats trapped across the regional corporations in Trinidad and to assess their resistance to antimicrobial agents. A total of 204 rats were trapped for the detection of selected bacteria. Standard methods were used to isolate Salmonella, Campylobacter and E. coli...

Purpose Timely antibiotic therapy in selected cases of diarrhea associated with bacterial infections can reduce the duration and severity of illness and prevent complications. The availability of a predictive index before identification of causative bacteria would aid in the choice of a therapeutic agent. Methods The study included patients admitted to the pediatrics unit at Konyang Universit...

INTRODUCTION Campylobacter spp are the major cause of enteritis in humans and more than 90% of reported infections are caused by Campylobacter jejuni. Fluoroquinolones such as ciprofloxacin are the antibiotics of choice for treatment. An increase in the frequency of ciprofloxacin-resistant Campylobacter has been reported globally due to a single base mutation (C-257 to T) in codon 86 of the qui...
