To address technology impact at the household level, farms were selected in two broad agro-ecological zones, Kampala and Highland. The Kampala zone was delineated as a “new” region with a substantial milkshed that was not delineated with the Kenya agro-ecological extrapolation. Since the “Horticultural” zone and Kenya dominated the landscape where dairying occurred outside of the Kampala milksh...

Natural products account for a significant proportion of modern day therapeutic agents. However, the discovery of novel compounds is hindered by the isolation process, which often relies upon extraction and chromatographic separation techniques. These methods, which are dependent upon the physicochemical properties of the compounds, have a limited ability to both purify and concentrate the mino...

The convergent total synthesis of the marine natural product (+)-bistramide C confirms the a priori assignments of its relative and absolute configurations, which were originally based on the combined application of [alpha]D analysis, NMR, and synthesis.

The use of digital, IT-based components in physical products is becoming increasingly relevant in practice. Surprisingly, the strategic impact of these “digitized products” has not received a lot of attention in IS research so far. Extant papers on the topic rely on ambiguous terminology (e.g., “smart products”, “cyberphysical systems”, “digital product-service systems”) and underlying concepts...

Ten members of the mezzettiaside family of natural products were synthesized and evaluated for anticancer and antibacterial activity. Complete anticancer (H460) and antibacterial (B. subtilis) activities for the ten natural products and four new analogues were found. Comparison to the cleistrioside and cleistetroside classes of natural products were made.

Peptidic natural products (PNPs) are widely used compounds that include many antibiotics and a variety of other bioactive peptides. Although recent breakthroughs in PNP discovery raised the challenge of developing new algorithms for their analysis, identification of PNPs via database search of tandem mass spectra remains an open problem. To address this problem, natural product researchers use ...

Bacterial cultivation has been a mainstay of natural products discovery for the past 80 years. However, the majority of bacteria are recalcitrant to culture, providing an untapped source for new natural products. Metagenomic analysis provides an alternative method to directly access the uncultivated genome for natural products research and for the discovery of novel, bioactive substances. Appli...

Enantioselective nucleophilic acylation catalysis provides a simple method of determining absolute configuration for unsaturated alcohols. Extension of this technique to natural products and synthetic compounds, as well as current limitations of this approach, are also described.
