The N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalysed redox amidation reaction is poorly developed and usually requires catalytic co-additives for electron-rich amine nucleophiles. We report a masking strategy (using CO2) that couples release of the free amine nucleophile to catalytic turnover, and in doing so, enables direct catalytic redox amidation of electron-rich amines.

The UV-induced photocyclization of a dithienylethene-annulated N-heterocyclic carbene precatalyst enabled photoswitchable ring-opening polymerizations of ε-caprolactone and δ-valerolactone. The polymerizations proceeded efficiently in ambient light, however UV irradiation attenuated the reaction rate (k(amb)/k(UV) = 59). Subsequent visible light exposure reversed the photocyclization and restor...

The catalytic activity of a series of coordinatively unsaturated NHC-M(III) (M = Rh, Ir; NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene) complexes was tested in the deuteration of secondary and tertiary silanes. Among these, [IrCl(I(t)Bu')(2)] provides the highest conversions to the deuterated species. Mechanistic studies highlight the reversible nature of the ortho-metalation reaction.

Synthesis of coordinatively unsaturated Cp*Co(IPr) (2), is accomplished by addition of free N-heterocyclic carbene IPr to [(Cp*Co)2-μ-(η(4):η(4)-toluene)] (1). Stoichiometric reactivity is consistent with a 16 electron species, as 2 undergoes ligand addition/NHC displacement and reversible reaction with dihydrogen. Cp*Co(IPr) represents an elusive example of a stable Cp*CoL fragment.

We report here the first gold-catalyzed nitrene transfer reaction. A gold(I) compound, supported by 4,4',4' '-tri-tert-butyl-2,2':6',2' '-terpyridine (tBu3tpy) as the ligand, efficiently catalyzes olefin aziridination with the use of the commercially available oxidant PhI(OAc)2 and sulfonamides. This system also mediates carbene insertion into benzene.

The N-methylation of amines using CO2 and PhSiH3 as source of CH3 was efficiently performed using a N-heterocyclic carbene copper(i) complex. The methodology was found compatible with aromatic and aliphatic primary and secondary amines. Synthetic and computational studies have been carried out to support the proposed reaction mechanism for this transformation.

A set of β-ketoimidazolium and β-ketoimidazolinium salts of the general formula [R(1)C(O)CH2{CH[NCR(3)CR(3)N(R(2))]}]X (R(1) = (t)Bu, naphth; R(2) = (i)Pr, Mes, (t)Bu; R(3) = H, Me, (H)2; X = Cl, Br) show contrasting reactivity with superhydride bases MHBEt3; two are reduced to chiral β-alcohol carbene-boranes R(1)CH(OH)CH2{C(BEt3)[NCR(3)CR(3)N(R(2))]} 2 (R(1) = (t)Bu; R(2) = (i)Pr, Mes; R(3) =...

A carbene-catalyzed reductive coupling reaction of carboxylic esters and substituted Hantzsch is disclosed. Key steps this include one-electron reduction a carbene catalyst-bound acyl azolium intermediate to generate the corresponding radical for subsequent alkylation reactions. The promoted by irradiation with visible light without involvement transition-metal photocatalysts. Mechanistic studi...

Rh-mediated carbene (co)polymerisation of diazomethane works best in the presence of Rh(III) catalyst precursors, the use of which leads to a significant increase in polymer yield and molecular weight. Chain termination via β-hydride elimination is severely suppressed for these species, although this process does still occur leading to unsaturated chain ends. Subsequent chain walking leading to...

We report the cross-dehydrative reaction of two alcohols to form unsymmetrical ethers using NHC–gold(I) complexes (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene). Our progress in developing this reaction into a straightforward procedure is discussed in detail. The optimised methodology proceeds under mild reaction conditions and produces water as the sole by-product. The synthetic utility of this environmentall...
