Serratia marcescens was isolated on a new medium-commercial deoxyribonuclease agar with the addition of cephalothin (1,000 mug/ml) and Toluidine Blue (1,000 mug/ml). It was detected in water samples even though it comprised only 0.1 to 0.0001% of the total bacterial population.

TO THE EDITOR—Urinary tract infections (UTIs) remain a common indication for antibiotic therapy in children [1]. They are frequently managed in the outpatient setting where availability of susceptibility results may be delayed, making selection of appropriate initial therapy important. We sought to evaluate susceptibility patterns of antibiotic agents used to treat UTIs in children by developin...

Seventy-eight aerotolerant Campylobacter isolates were characterized phenotypically and by DNA hybridization (hydroxyapatite method at 50 and 65 degrees C). Two DNA relatedness groups were found. (i) Sixty-four strains belonged to aerotolerant Campylobacter DNA hybridization group 2. These organisms were isolated from humans, primarily with diarrheal illness, and animals on several continents. ...

Here we describe the presence of two very similar but unusual variants of AmpC cephalosporinase in each Cronobacter sakazakii and C. malonaticus isolates conferring resistance exclusively to first generation cephalosporins. During a survey on the antibiotic resistance patterns of C. sakazakii and C. malonaticus strains isolated from a milk powder production facility, originally two different ph...

Dominique Pagniez, MD, Néphrologie B, Centre Hospitalier Universitaire F-59037 Lille (France) Dear Sir, Group B streptococci cause infections in neonates, but also in adults, with a significant morbidity and mortality rate. Reports of infection in CAPD patients are scarce. We report on such a case. A 25-year-old patient with membranous nephropathy had been on CAPD for 7 months. He was generally...

Predicting substrates for enzymes of unknown function is a major postgenomic challenge. Substrate discovery, like inhibitor discovery, is constrained by our ability to explore chemotypes; it would be expanded by orders of magnitude if reactive sites could be probed with fragments rather than fully elaborated substrates, as is done for inhibitor discovery. To explore the feasibility of this appr...

The cephalosporin group of antibiotics has gained widespread use in combating resistant infections. Because of the necessity for intravenous administration of cephalothin, and the intramuscular route for cephaloridine, the development of a new member of this series which is effective orally prompted study of its penetration into the eye. This is the first reported study of the passage of cephal...

In the last in our three-part series on myopia, Catherine Viner considers the assessment and correction of myopia in practice. Module C15569, one general point for optometrists and DOs Part 3: Assessment and correction T he predominant symptom in uncorrected (or undercorrected) myopia is blurred distance vision.1-3 It is suggested that because this symptom is so readily apparent, myopes account...
