Understanding the soil-plant relationship is important to determine critical limits of soil properties that influence crop growth and yield. The objectives were quantify compaction levels on physical yield in a clayey Oxisol. An experiment was performed having main plots, (NT: no-tillage during six years, NTC: NT + four passes 10 Mg machine agricultural year 2003/2004, Chisel: chiseling harrowi...

STARzoom is a visualisation of a semantic hierarchical database utilising the hypernym structure from WordNet. It is also the search tool for that same database with which the user interacts in trying to visually chisel out a search query. The database contains the semantics from a large number of documents. The feedback from the system being the texts semantically closest to the query.

CRESS (Chisel Representation Employing Systematic Specification) is used for graphical behaviour description, underpinned by formal and implementation languages. Plug-in frameworks adapt it for particular application domains such as Intelligent Networks, Internet Telephony and Interactive Voice Response. The CRESS notation and its syntax are explained. The semantics of CRESS is discussed with r...

Crop growth models can be useful tools in evaluating the impacts of di€erent tillage systems on the growth and ®nal yield of crops. A tillage model was incorporated into CROPGRO-Soybean and tested for conditions in Ames, IA, USA. Predictions of changes in surface residue, bulk density, hydraulic conductivity, runo€ curve number, and surface albedo were consistent with expected behaviors of thes...

Soil N2O emissions from three corn (Zea mays L.)-soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] systems in central Iowa were measured from the spring of 2003 through February 2005. The three managements systems evaluated were full-width tillage (fall chisel plow, spring disk), no-till, and no-till with a rye (Secale cereale L. 'Rymin') winter cover crop. Four replicate plots of each treatment were establishe...

Soil C change and CO2 emission due to different tillage systems need to be evaluated to encourage the adoption of conservation practices to sustain soil productivity and protect the environment. We hypothesize that soil C storage and CO2 emission respond to conservation tillage differently from conventional tillage because of their differential effects on soil properties. This study was conduct...

Extensive Mohs surgery for carcinomas of the forehead and scalp occasionally requires the removal of periosteum. The exposed bone presents a wound management problem. One method, if healing by secondary intention is a viable option, is to chisel bone to stimulate granulation tissue and promote healing. A case is presented that describes this procedure in an elderly patient.
