A procedure based on the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has been developed to classify cucumber mosaic cucumovirus (CMV) isolates accurately into two subgroups. Two CMV-specific primers that flank the CMV capsid protein gene were used to amplify a DNA fragment of approximately 870 bp. Restriction enzyme analysis of this fragment produces distinct restriction patterns that assign the CMV isolat...

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection involving the skin is rare. We present a case of a renal transplant recipient who developed fever and axillary, scrotal and penile skin ulcers after renal transplantation. The skin ulcers did not heal with antibiotics. The skin biopsy revealed CMV inclusion bodies, CMV antigen on immunohistochemistry and high CMV DNA copies. The patient was diagnosed with CMV cut...

OBJECTIVE Approximately 8-10% of newborns with asymptomatic congenital cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection develop sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). However, the relationship between CMV load, SNHL and central nervous system (CNS) damage in cCMV infection remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the relationship between urinary CMV load, SNHL and CNS damage in newborns with cCMV infection. ...

BACKGROUND Samples from babies exhibiting clinical symptoms suggestive of congenital infection are referred regularly to NICD, New Delhi,, from Government Hospitals located in Delhi and a home for abandoned children (Palna), for the diagnosis of etiological agents like toxoplasma, rubella, CMV and herpes. Blood samples of mothers of most of the affected babies are also received. OBJECTIVE Eva...

PPi analogs and esters of these were studied for their effect on cytomegalovirus (CMV) multiplication. Five aromatic monoesters of phosphonoformate esterified either in the phosphono or the carboxylic group and two diesters were demonstrated to inhibit CMV DNA synthesis and late viral protein synthesis. In a direct assay, the monoesters but not the diesters inhibited CMV DNA polymerase activity...

AIM Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection can cause a variety of neurological deficits of delayed onset in infants who are asymptomatic at birth. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of congenital CMV infection among children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in Nagasaki, Japan. METHODS Twenty-nine children with ASD who were born in Nagasaki and had no other major ne...

AIM To study the differences in aqueous cytokines in Posner-Schlossman Syndrome (PSS) patients with and without human cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA in the aqueous humor. METHODS This is a prospective study. Fifty-three uveitis patients with clinical signs of PSS were enrolled and aqueous humor samples were collected. Fourteen PSS patients were positive of CMV DNA in the aqueous by polymerase chai...

The resistance of cytomegalovirus (CMV) to ganciclovir or valganciclovir is a factor in therapeutic failure and disease progression. CMV strains resistant to ganciclovir or valganciclovir have been associated with specific mutations in the UL97 and UL54 genes. Sequencing of both CMV UL97 and UL54 genes was performed to detect the presence of CMV antiviral resistance in six patients who received...

We report the development of a simple and rapid PCR assay for quantitation of the cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA load in polymorphonuclear leukocytes. Using this system, a very good correlation was found between a high number of CMV copies in the blood and the presence of CMV disease in subjects with AIDS.

BACKGROUND Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection exacerbates ulcerative colitis (UC) refractory to immunosuppressive therapies (IMT). However, the underlying UC remained active in some UC patients, despite the fact that CMV-DNA in colonic mucosa became negative after antiviral therapy. Therefore, new therapeutic strategies for UC patients concomitant with CMV infection in mucosa are required. AIMS ...
