Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has been a major cause of nosocomial infection in Irish hospitals for 4 decades, and replacement of predominant MRSA clones has occurred several times. An MRSA isolate recovered in 2006 as part of a larger study of sporadic MRSA exhibited a rare spa (t878) and multilocus sequence (ST779) type and was nontypeable by PCR- and DNA microarray-based...
This study evaluated the possible advantages provided by a genotypic method over commercially available biochemical systems for the identification of clinical isolates of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS). Partial sequencing of the sodA gene was performed for 168 coagulase-negative clinical isolates of staphylococci identified previously with the ID32 STAPH system. Of these, 101 (60.1%) we...
A 12-year-old child developed meningitis 6 days after a third ventriculostomy by endoscopy. A coagulase-negative Staphylococcus sp. was isolated in pure culture from the cerebrospinal fluid and was definitely identified as Staphylococcus lugdunensis after the 16S ribosomal DNA gene and rpoB gene were sequenced. This report describes the first case of S. lugdunensis meningitis.
Dermatophytes are a group of keratinophilic fungi falling within the genera of epidermophyton, microsporum and trichophyton. The genus trichophyton is particularly important and complex which comprises at least 24 recognised species. Additionally, molecular strain typing of trichophyton rubrum isolated within single nail specimens from patients with onychomycosis indicates involveme...
The VP4, VP2, and VP1 gene regions were evaluated for their usefulness in typing human enteroviruses. Three published RT-PCR primers sets targeting separately these three gene regions were used. Initially, from a total of 86 field isolates (36 HEV-A, 40 HEV-B, and 10 HEV-C) tested, 100% concordance in HEV-A was identified from all three gene regions (VP4, VP2, and VP1). However, for HEV-B and H...
Erik Ahlstrand (2013): Coagulase-negative Staphylococci in Hematological Malignancy. Örebro Studies in Medicine 95. Bacterial infections are common in hematological malignancy. Coagulasenegative staphylococci (CoNS) are among the most prevalent causes of bacteremia in patients with hematological malignancies. In this thesis, different aspects of CoNS in hematological malignancy have been studie...
capsules from a range of pathogenic bacteria are the key determinants of virulency. the capsule hasbeen implicated in virulence of pasteurella multocida. in this study a type-specific polymerase chain reaction(pcr) assay was used for capsular typing of 39 avian p. multocida isolates from iran. the pcr amplified afragment of 1044 bp from all of tested isolates. it was found that all avian p. mul...
The lack of an adequate typing system hampers our understanding of the epidemiology of infections caused by coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS). CoNS have become recognized as important nosocomial pathogens and the principal cause of infections associated with invasive devices. Sensitive, specific, and convenient methods are needed to evaluate whether implementing infection control guidelin...
