We establish upper bounds for the spectral gap of the stochastic Ising model at low temperature in an N ×N box, with boundary conditions which are “plus” except for small regions at the corners which are either free or “minus.” The spectral gap decreases exponentially in the size of the corner regions, when these regions are of size at least of order logN . This means that removing as few as O(...

We report investigations of conductance fluctuations (with 1/f(alpha) power spectra) in doped silicon at low temperatures (T<20 K) as it is tuned through the metal-insulator transition (MIT) by changing the carrier concentration n. The scaled magnitude of noise, gamma(H), increases with decreasing T following an approximate power law gamma(H) approximately T-beta. At low T, gamma(H) diverges as...

In this paper, we report the first observation of metal-enhanced S(2) emission at room and low temperature (77K). The S(2) emission intensity of Azulene is enhanced by close proximity to Silver island films (SiFs). In this regard, a ≈ 2-fold higher S(2) fluorescence intensity of Azulene was observed from SiFs as compared to a glass control sample. This suggests that S(2) excited states can coup...

We report on muonium (Mu) emission into vacuum following μ(+) implantation in mesoporous thin SiO(2) films. We obtain a yield of Mu into vacuum of (38±4)% at 250 K and (20±4)% at 100 K for 5 keV μ(+) implantation energy. From the implantation energy dependence of the Mu vacuum yield we determine the Mu diffusion constants in these films: D(Mu)(250 K)=(1.6±0.1)×10(-4)  cm(2)/s and D(Mu)(100 K)=(...

We investigate the origin of the spin Seebeck effect in yttrium iron garnet (YIG) samples for film thicknesses from 20 nm to 50  μm at room temperature and 50 K. Our results reveal a characteristic increase of the longitudinal spin Seebeck effect amplitude with the thickness of the insulating ferrimagnetic YIG, which levels off at a critical thickness that increases with decreasing temperature....

We investigate theoretically the phase behavior of particles with limited valence in two dimensions, by solving the first-order Wertheim theory form. As previously found for three dimensions, in two dimensions also the valence has a strong impact on the phase diagram, controlling the location of the gas-liquid coexistence. On decreasing the valence, the critical density and temperature decrease...

We present a double-charge model for the interaction between parallel polarizable hard spherocylinders subject to an external electric field. Using Monte Carlo simulations and free-energy calculations, we predict the phase behaviour for this model as a function of the density and electric field strength, at a fixed length-to-diameter ratio L/D = 5. The resulting phase diagram contains, in addit...

A Wilson loop is defined, in 4-D pure Einstein gravity, as the trace of the holonomy of the Christoffel connection or of the spin connection, and its invariance under the symmetry transformations of the action is showed (diffeomorphisms and local Lorentz transformations). We then compute the loop perturbatively, both on a flat background and in the presence of an external source; we also allow ...

The 3D XY model with random in-plane couplings is simulated to model the phase diagram of a disordered type II superconductor as a function of temperature T and randomness strength p for fixed applied magnetic field. As p increases to a critical p(c), the first order vortex lattice melting line turns parallel to the T axis, continuing down to low temperatures, rather than ending at a critical p...

We investigate subdominant order parameters stabilizing at low temperatures in nanoscale high-T(c) cuprate islands, motivated by the recent observation of a fully gapped state in nanosized YBa(2)Cu(3)O(7-δ) [D. Gustafsson et al., Nature Nanotech. 8, 25 (2013)]. Using complementary quasiclassical and tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes methods, we show on distinctly different properties dependent...
