The status of CP violation and the CKM matrix is reviewed. Direct CP violation in B decay has been established and the measurement of sin 2β in ψK modes reached 5% accuracy. I discuss the implications of these, and of the possible deviations of the CP asymmetries in b → s modes from that in ψK. The first meaningful measurements of α and γ are explained, together with their significance for cons...
Significant progress has been made in recent years on the development of gravitational wave detectors. Sources such as coalescing compact binary systems, low-mass X-ray binaries, stellar collapses and pulsars are all possible candidates for detection. The most promising design of gravitational wave detector uses test masses a long distance apart and freely suspended as pendulums on Earth or in ...
Low frequency power oscillations may be triggered by many events in the system. Most oscillations are damped by the system, but undamped oscillations can lead to system collapse. Oscillations develop as a result of rotor acceleration/deceleration following a change in active power transfer from a generator. Like the operations limits, the monitoring of power system oscillating modes is a releva...
We explore corrections to electroweak parameters in the context of Extended Technicolor (ETC) models in which the ETC gauge-boson which generates the top-quark mass carries weak SU(2) charge. For mt ∼ 150 GeV there exist potentially large corrections to the Z decay width to b-quarks. Interestingly, in contrast to the situation in ETC models where the gauge-boson which generates the top-quark ma...
The implications of the many proper time amplitudes for the process Φ → K o + ¯ K o was discussed in a recent letter of B. Kayser and L. Stodolsky who predicted a small correction (∼ 5%) to the usually predicted phase oscillation frequency for forthcoming Φ factory experiments. Based on previous work (also using the many proper times formalism), we predicted a much larger correction factor ≈ 2....
The P-decay of cosmic-ray mesons is discussed. The possible process of decay into electron-neutrino plus a neutral particle is treated in some detail. This process is found to fit in well with the familiar formalism of P-decay of atomic nuclei. A comparison is made with present experimental data on mesons.
Abstract Catastrophic failure of a tailings dam at an iron ore mine complex in Brumadinho, Brazil, on 25th January 2019 released 11.7 million m 3 downstream. Although reportedly monitored using array geotechnical techniques, the collapse occurred without any apparent warning. It claimed more than 200 lives and caused considerable environmental damage. Here we present Intermittent Small Baseline...
The factors leading to the collapse of tunnel face are diverse, and there is an interaction relationship between multiple influencing at physical mechanical level. By analyzing coupling affecting instability working face, this paper deduces calculation method effect construction risk for a certain event based on conditional probability theory, makes reasonable assumptions monitoring data probab...
CONTEXT New York City firefighters responding to the World Trade Center (WTC) disaster on September 11, 2001, were exposed to numerous hazards. A medical screening program was conducted 3 weeks after the disaster on a sample of firefighters. OBJECTIVES To determine whether arrival time at the WTC and other exposure variables (including respirator use) were associated with symptoms and changes...
Non-leptonic D meson decays may provide a reliable testbed for the multiquark interpretation of light scalar mesons. In this letter we consider D s decay and show that a 4-quark f 0 (980) meson could induce a decay pattern, which is forbidden for a q ¯ q constituent structure. Experimental tests to probe such possibilities are within reach in the near future.
