We report the detection of a massive rotating disk around the high-mass Class 0 candidate NGC7538 S. The disk is well-resolved with BIMA (θA =3 ′′ . 7) in 3.4 mm continuum and in HCN J=1→0. It is seen nearly edge on and has a size of ∼30,000 AU. A young, powerful outflow perpendicular to the rotating disk is mapped in SiO J=2→1 and HCO J=1→0. The dynamical age of the outflow is ≤ 10,000 yr. The...

We present similarity solutions which describe the runaway collapse of a rotating isothermal cloud and its subsequent inside-out collapse. The similarity solutions contain the sound speed, c s , and the ratio of the speci c angular momentum to the mass, !, as model parameters. During the runaway collapse, the surface density of the disk is nearly constant in the central part and inversely propo...

We describe three-dimensional general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of a geometrically thin accretion disk around a non-spinning black hole. The disk has a thickness h/r ∼ 0.05−0.1 over the radius range (2−20)GM/c2. In steady state, the specific angular momentum profile of the inflowing magnetized gas deviates by less than 2% from that of the standard thin disk model of Novikov &...

The projected kinematical properties of unequal-mass merger remnants of disk galaxies are analysed and shown to agree well with observations of disky, fast rotating elliptical galaxies. This supports the major merger hypothesis of early-type galaxy formation. However, in contrast to previous claims, the merger remnants are very anisotropic with values of the anisotropy parameter that are simila...

MHD winds can emanate from both stars and surrounding disks. When the two systems are coupled by accretion, it is of interest to know how much wind power is available and which (if either) of the two rotators dominates that power. We investigate this in the context of multi-polar planetary nebulae (PNe) and proto-planetary nebulae (PPNe), for which recent observations have revealed the need for...

MHD winds can emanate from both stars and surrounding disks. When the two systems are coupled by accretion, it is of interest to know which (if either) of the two dominates the outflow power. Recent observations lead us to consider how such coupled MHD winds may be operating in planetary nebulae (PN). In this context, we calculate the MHD wind power from a coupled disk and star, where the forme...

This paper presents the design of a computer-controlled pin-on-disk tribometer for friction characterization of various friction sliding pairs. The tribometer setup comprises two high-bandwidth servomotors for the control of the rotating disk and the normal load-related spindle drive, as well as a high-precision tri-axial piezoelectric force sensor for normal and tangential forces measurement. ...

Multimedia computing requires support for heterogeneous data types with differing storage, communication, and delivery requirements. Continuous media data types such as audio and video impose delivery requirements that are not satisfied by conventional physical storage organizations. In this paper we describe a physical organization for multimedia data based on the need to support the delivery ...

The extraction device used in rotating-disk sorptive extraction consists of a Teflon disk in which a sorptive phase is fixed on one of its surfaces. Depending on the configuration, the rotation axis of the disk device can be either perpendicular or parallel to its radius, giving rise to two different mass transfer patterns when rotating-disk sorptive extraction is applied in liquid samples. In ...
