A novel fluorescence imaging technique based on deconvolution microscopy and spectral analysis is presented here as an alternative to confocal laser scanning microscopy. It allowed rapid, specific and simultaneous identification of five major opportunistic pathogens, relevant for public health, in suspension and provided quantitative results.

Bacterial biofilms frequently form on fungal surfaces and can be involved in numerous bacterial-fungal interaction processes, such as metabolic cooperation, competition, or predation. The study of biofilms is important in many biological fields, including environmental science, food production, and medicine. However, few studies have focused on such bacterial biofilms, partially due to the diff...

Laser Scanning Microscopy Techniques such as Confocal Microscopy, Two Photon Excitation Microscopy, Second Harmonic Generation Microscopy or Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging have been successfully employed to date for imaging skin cancer. However, the resolution that such techniques can provide is limited by diffraction, which prevents accurately imaging (and differentiating) optical details sized...

PURPOSE To describe the microscopic corneal and conjunctival findings in patients with Fabry disease (FD) related keratopathy by using in vivo confocal microscopy. DESIGN Prospective observational case series. METHODS Twelve eyes of six patients affected by Fabry disease, belonging to two different families, underwent in vivo confocal microscopic examination. Corneal and conjunctival morpho...

Cell-imaging approaches using new laser-based technologies have a wide applicability to thefields of pathology and cell biology. Here, we present the application of several of these techniques, including confocal scanning laser microscopy (CSLM), laser scanning cytometry (LSC), and laser capture microdissection (LCM), to studies of cell signaling by environmental agents in lung disease. Using b...
