It is well known that a discrete band-limited signal can be made broad-banded if we randomly permute its entries. In this paper, we study the efficacy of such spectral whitening procedure and its application to Sigma Delta quantization in Compressed Sensing. As a side result, we show that a similar whitening phenomenon can be observed in a broad class of non-Fourier orthogonal transformations.

Personal Learning Environments have emerged as a complementary, even challenging, paradigm to Adaptive Learning Systems. We consider the mash-up era as an appropriate approach for a successful realization of digital personal learning environments. However, mash-ups are also accompanied by critical technical and usability challenges. In this paper, we try to identify some of these challenges and...

Purpose: The main purpose of this paper is to illustrate examples of the current maturity of universities both in the UK and abroad when implementing a continuous improvement programme or change agenda using techniques such as Lean Six Sigma. Design/Methodology/Approach: 21 UK universities and 17 International Universities have been identified and targeted with a questionnaire to research their...

Lower Mekong Basin (LMB) experiences a recurrent drought phenomenon. However, few studies have focused on drought monitoring in this region due to lack of ground observations. The newly released Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation with Station data (CHIRPS) with a long-term record and high resolution has a great potential for drought monitoring. Based on the assessment of CHIRPS for ca...

Sigma-delta quantization is a way of representing bandlimited signals (functions with compactly supported Fourier transforms) by {0, 1} sequences for each sampling density such that convolving these sequences with appropriately chosen filters produces approximations of the original signals. Approximations are refined by increasing the sampling density; this is what makes such a scheme fundament...

Proton-nucleus collisions, where the beam proton gets excited to the delta resonance and then decays to pπ + , either inside or outside the nuclear medium, are studied. Cross-sections for various kinematics for the (p,p ′ π +) reaction between 500 MeV and 1 GeV beam energy are calculated to see the effects of the nuclear medium on the propagation and decay of the resonance. The cross-sections s...

weSPOT is a new European initiative proposing a novel approach for personal and social inquiry-based learning in secondary and higher education. weSPOT aims at enabling students to create their mash-ups out of cloud-based tools and services in order to perform scientific investigations. Students will also be able to share their inquiry accomplishments in social networks and receive feedback fro...

AbstrAct This chapter explains how the successful theories about process integration can be implemented in different industrial fields by introducing a rigorous methodology. Starting from the consideration that processes must be managed to achieve customer satisfaction, the companies necessitate changing their old paradigms and focusing on an integrated management of their functions. In this ch...

Extreme learning machine (ELM) has shown its good performance in regression applications with a very fast speed. But there is still a difficulty to compromise between better generalization performance and smaller complexity of the ELM (number of hidden nodes). This paper proposes a method called Delta TestELM (DT-ELM), which operates in an incremental way to create less complex ELM structures a...
