Cementum is a highly specialized connective tissue that covers tooth roots. The only cementum-specific protein described to date is the cementum attachment protein (CAP). A putative sequence for CAP was established from a cDNA clone isolated from a human cementifying fibroma cDNA library. This sequence overlaps with a phosphatase-like protein in muscle termed the protein-tyrosine phosphatase-li...
Cementum was first described by Denton GB in 1835 as a calcified, avascular mesenchymal tissue that covers the entire root surface. It approximately comprises of 50% of hydroxyappetite and 50% of organic matrix which consist of non collagenous and collagenous proteins. Protein extract of mature cementum promotes cell attachment, migration and stimulates protein synthesis of gingival fibroblast ...
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to evaluate the reparative potential of cementum histologically after intentional root contact with a temporary skeletal anchorage device. METHODS Seventeen patients (8 male, 9 female; mean age, 16.2 years; range, 13.5-21.6 years) who were scheduled for extraction of 4 first premolars as part of their orthodontic treatment participated in this study. The...
Structure and composition of teeth of the saltwater crocodile Crocodylus porosus were characterized by several high-resolution analytical techniques. X-ray diffraction in combination with elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy showed that the mineral phase of the teeth is a carbonated calcium-deficient nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite in all three tooth-constituting tissues: Dentin, enamel,...
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the histological responses of cementum, root dentin, and pulp following intentional root injuries caused via self-tapping and self-drilling miniscrews. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fourteen patients (with a mean age of 15.7 years and age range of 14-18 years) who were scheduled for the extraction of all four first premolars as part of their orthodontic...
Cervical dental caries and/or abrasions are often associated with gingival recessions. These lesions can be treated with either restorative or periodontal approaches. There are various periodontal approaches for treating gingival recessions associated with carious cervical lesions (Matter, 1979; Fourel, 1982; Miller, 1983; Pini Prato et al, 1992; Goldstein et al, 2002) that make it possible to ...
A lthough recent data suggest that the incidence rate of dental caries has begun to decline dramatically in developed nations' Canadians still have a moderate to high rate of the disease.2 Fluoridation of communal water supplies is the most cost-effective measure to prevent dental caries; it reduces dental decay by 30% to 60% yet costs only about 15¢ per person per year.3 Unfortunately, only ab...
Cleidocranial dysplasia is an autosomal dominant condition caused by mutation of RUNX2, characterized by generalized dysplasia of the bones and teeth. Affected individuals have short stature, atypical facial features, and skeletal anomalies affecting mainly the skull and clavicle. The dental manifestations are mainly delayed exfoliation of the primary teeth and delayed eruption of the permanent...
This study was conducted on 48 impacted and 51 erupted maxillary permanent canine teeth extracted from healthy patients aged 13-73 years. Longitudinal buccolingual ground sections were prepared. The distance between the edges of cementum and enamel in each specimen was measured with an eyepiece micrometer. A correlation test was applied between age and the distance between enamel and cementum m...
Synchrotron micro X-ray fluorescence has been used to study differences in the trace element concentration between the dentine and cementum rings of human teeth. The results show that metals such as zinc are concentrated in the cementum rings. This suggests that if the rings are deposited annually a temporal record of metal exposure may be extracted from this material.
