We introduce a model for the computation of structure-from-motion based on the physiology of visual cortical areas MT and MST. The model assumes that the perception of depth from motion is related to the firing of a subset of MT neurons tuned to both velocity and disparity. The model's MT neurons are connected to each other laterally to form modulatory receptive-field surrounds that are gated b...
Distribution of molluscs in the eastern part of the Persian Gulf were studied during the PG-GOOS cruise (Oct-Nov 2012), using the 250 cm2 Van Veen grab for sampling. Sixty gastropod and 23 bivalve taxa in addition to one scaphopod taxon were identified. Gastropods constituted 80% of molluscs. The abundance of molluscs averaged 1398.36 (±261.95) ind./m2. Costellaria sp. was the most abundant ...
S. Sharifi (corresponding author) M. Sterling D. W. Knight Department of Civil Engineering, University of Birmingham, Birmingham B15 2TT, UK Tel.: +44 121 414 5152 E-mail: [email protected] The Shiono and Knight method (SKM) is a simple depth-averaged flow model, based on the RANS equations which can be used to estimate the lateral distributions of depth-averaged velocity and boundary shear str...
This paper presents a tidally averaged model that approximates the long-term mixing processes of dissolved matter in tidal waters. The averaged transport model is based on a stochastic particle model. Because formal averaging techniques are used, the asymptotic validity of the approximation can be proven under the restriction that the diiusion coeecient is small. Numerical implementation of the...
Meta-analysis is the predominant approach for quantitatively synthesizing a set of studies. If studies themselves are high quality, meta-analysis can provide valuable insights into current scientific state knowledge about particular phenomenon. In psychological science, most common to conduct frequentist meta-analysis. this primer, we discuss an alternative method, Bayesian model-averaged This ...
A new water-wave model has been derived which is based on variational techniques and combines a depth-averaged vertical (component of) vorticity with depth-dependent potential flow. The model facilitates the further restriction of the vertical profile of the velocity potential to n-th order polynomials or a finite-element profile with a small number of elements (say), leading to a framework for...
Variants of the Budkyo hydrological model describe the effects of land use change on annual water yield. A recent modification using a simple process-based ecohydrological model provides insight into the partitioning of rainfall between runoff and evapotranspiration. In particular, the ‘effective vegetation rooting depth’ becomes the single free parameter in the model and can be related to land...
We consider the coverage rate of model-averaged confidence intervals for the treatment means in a factorial experiment, whenwe use a normal linearmodel in the analysis.Modelaveraging provides a useful compromise between using the full model (containing all main effects and interactions) and a ‘‘best model’’ obtained by some model-selection process. Use of the full model guarantees perfect cover...
