BACKGROUND Glycolic acid has been used extensively for the treatment of photoaging and wrinkles. Suggestions have been made that glycolic acid may have specific dermal effects, although biochemical studies are limited. OBJECTIVE This study's purpose was to examine the effect of glycolic acid on the radioactively labeled collagen production in human skin fibroblasts in culture. METHODS Norma...

Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) are major players in regenerative therapies for wound healing via their paracrine activity, mediated partially by exosomes. Our purpose was to test if MSC-derived exosomes could accelerate enhancing the biological properties of main cell types involved key phases this process. Thus, effects on (i) macrophage activation, (ii) angiogenesis, (ii...

Epidermal cells from adult guinea pig skin attach and differentiate preferentially on substrates of type IV (basement membrane) collagen, compared to those of types I--III collagen. In contrast, guinea pig dermal fibroblasts attach equally well to all four collagen substrates. Fibronectin mediates the attachment of fibroblasts but not of epidermal cells to collagen.

BACKGROUND Stretch marks are a disfiguring skin condition of yet unknown etiology. OBJECTIVE We wanted to compare the functional disposition of dermal fibroblasts, derived from unaffected skin of patients with stretch marks and fibroblasts from normal age-matched subjects, and develop a test to predict predisposition to stretch mark development. METHODS Skin biopsies from normal subjects (N...

Aging is a multifactorial process that is characterized by distinct molecular and biological changes [1]. However, deciphering the molecular and cellular mechanisms of aging in vivo is far from complete. It has been suggested that the aging process of the skin is mainly determined by alterations of its dermal stroma consisting predominantly of fibroblasts and the extracellular matrix [2, 3]. In...

Aberrant extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling in sebaceous glands and pilosebaceous units in the skin is associated with scar formation under acne conditions. To investigate the involvement of Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes), a Gram-positive anaerobic microbial species, in ECM remodeling in sebaceous glands and pilosebaceous units, we examined the effects of P. acnes culture media, formalin...
