Conventional photonic bandgaps (PBGs) for linear polarization waves strongly depend on the incident angle. Usually, PBGs will shift toward short wavelengths (i.e., blue-shifted gaps) as angle increases, which limits their applications. In some practices, manipulation of circular is also important. Here, theoretically investigated. We propose one-dimensional crystals (1DPCs) containing anisotrop...

We systematically study a collection of refractive phenomena that can possibly occur at the interface of a two-dimensional photonic crystal with the use of the wave vector diagram formalism. Cases with a single propagating beam in the positive or negative direction as well as cases with birefringence were observed. We examine carefully the conditions to obtain a single propagating beam inside t...

A known algorithm for modeling quasi-periodic lattices is used to generate two-dimensional quadratic nonlinear photonic quasi-crystals containing a set of desired discrete spectral components. This allows us to fabricate optical devices in which an arbitrary set of nonlinear optical processes can be efficient. We demonstrate this capability by fabricating two devices: a multidirectional single-...

Magnetooptical properties of the materials with periodically modulated dielectric constant – photonic crystals (or band-gap materials) have been examined with relation to their possible applications for the control of electromagnetic radiation in the integrated optics devices. For this investigation we propose the original theoretical approach based on the perturbation theory. Magnetooptical Fa...

We systematically investigate and compare general methods of designing single mode photonic crystal waveguides in a two-dimensional hexagonal lattice of air holes in a dielectric material. We apply the rather general methods to dielectric-core hexagonal lattice photonic crystals since they have not been widely explored before. We show that it is possible to obtain single mode guiding in a limit...

We report easy to implement techniques for the fabrication of high aspect ratio LiNbO3 photonic crystals. The methods rely on optical grade dicing followed by focused ion beam (FIB) milling. A 2D photonic crystal with an extinction ratio of -14dB is demonstrated. We show how the techniques can be combined for the development of 3D photonic crystals. Optical tweezers is an example how to use light to generate a physical force. They have been used to levitate viruses, bacteria, cells, and sub cellular organisms. Nonetheless it would be beneficial to use such force to develop a new kind of applications. However the radiation pressure usually is small to think in moving larger objects. Currently, there is some research investigating novel phot...
