The light curves of the pre-main-sequence star KH 15D from 1913–2003 can be understood if the star is a member of an eccentric binary that is encircled by a vertically thin, inclined ring of dusty gas. Eclipses occur whenever the reflex motion of a star carries it into the shadow of the circumbinary ring; the eclipses occur with period equal to the binary orbital period of 48.4 days. Features o...

The variability of ultraviolet and photosynthetically active radiation during the total solar eclipse of 29 March 2006 was examined in this study. The measurements from NILU-UV multichannel actinometers at 7 stations of the Greek UV Network were used, where the maximum eclipse percentage ranged from 73.1% to 94.8%. In addition, 5 an extra instrument was established at a remote Greek island, Kas...

Two Burmese eclipse calculations, one lunar and one solar, are analysed using examples from a Burmese manuscript. The fundamental parameters are with some important exceptions the same as in the Suryasiddhanta, but the handling of, for instance, parallax in the solar eclipse is different and much simplified. Specific to Burma are also the shadow calculations.

We present 7 eclipse timings of the low mass X-ray binary EXO0748−676 obtained with the USA experiment during 1999−2000 as well as 122 eclipse timings obtained with RXTE during 1996−2000. According to our analysis, the mean orbital period has increased by ∼ 8 ms between the pre-RXTE era (1985−1990) and the RXTE/USA era (1996−2000). This corresponds to an orbital period derivative of Porb/Ṗorb ∼...

An investigation of the Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) height evolution over Greece, during the solar eclipse of 29 March 2006, is presented. Ground based observations were carried out using lidar detection and ranging devices and ground meteorological instruments, to estimate the height of the mixing layer (ML) before, during and after the solar eclipse in northern and southern parts of Greece...

Swept-frequency (1±10 MHz) ionosonde measurements were made at Helston, Cornwall (50 060N, 5 180W) during the total solar eclipse on August 11, 1999. Soundings were made every three minutes. We present a method for estimating the percentage of the ionising solar radiation which remains unobscured at any time during the eclipse by comparing the variation of the ionospheric E-layer with the behav...

Harm reduction for tobacco smokers may involve reducing their exposure to lethal smoke constituents. Assessing smoke constituent exposure and any resulting harm reduction from a potential reduced-exposure product (PREP) will involve preclinical, clinical, and epidemiological research. The purpose of this study was to evaluate a clinical laboratory model for assessing the acute effects of PREPs ...

An autopilot scheme of volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT)/intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) planning with the guidance of prior knowl-edge is established with recorded interactions between a planner and a commercial treatment planning system (TPS). Microsoft (MS) Visual Studio Coded UI is applied to record some common planner-TPS interactions as subroutines. The TPS used in this...

The accuracy of dose calculations at extended SSD is of significant importance in the dosimetric planning of total body irradiation (TBI). In a first step toward the implementation of electronic, multi-leaf collimator compensation for dose inhomogeneities and surface contour in TBI, we have evaluated the ability of the Eclipse AAA to accurately predict dose distributions in water at extended SS...

This paper describes the user interface facilities of the ECLIPSE integrated project support environment. This interface is based on a consistent metaphor called the'control panel'metaphor and includes standard help and message-handling systems. The paper describes these as well as some of the interface standards which have been developed. The interface has been implemented on top of the'applic...
