We present a search, using KamLAND, a kiloton-scale anti-neutrino detector, for low-energy anti-neutrino events that were coincident with the gravitational-wave (GW) events GW150914 and GW151226, and the candidate event LVT151012. We find no inverse beta-decay neutrino events within ±500 s of either GW signal. This non-detection is used to constrain the electron anti-neutrino fluence and the to...

We report on the search for Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs) in the energy range 1-100 GeV in coincidence with the prompt emission detected by satellites using the Astrophysical Radiation with Ground-based Observatory at YangBaJing (ARGO-YBJ) air shower detector. Thanks to its mountain location (Yangbajing, Tibet, P.R. China, 4300 m a.s.l.), active surface (∼6700 m of Resistive Plate Chambers), and larg...

A new thin-target method (patent pending) is described for portal imaging with low-energy (tens of keV) photons from a medical linear accelerator operating in a special mode. Low-energy photons are usually produced in the accelerator target, but are absorbed by the target and flattening filter, both made of medium- or high-Z materials such as Cu or W. Since the main contributor to absorption of...

This paper is a continuation of the preliminary dosimetric evaluation of source terms at PW laser systems [1] the proton case. The main acceleration mechanisms and the associated characteristics of the accelerated proton beams were briefly presented. FLUKA and GEANT4 Monte Carlo transport codes were used to compute absorbed doses due to three proton beams of well defined energy and spatial dist...

Some gamma ray bursts may be produced by supernovae exploding in close massive binary systems (type Ib/c supernovae) as suggested by the recent observation of SN 1998bw/GRB 980425. We propose that high energy radiation observed in such gamma ray bursts may be produced by synchrotron radiation of electrons accelerated by 1st order Fermi acceleration at a quasi-stationary shock in the high veloci...

We have carried out a principal component analysis for 625 gamma-ray bursts in the BATSE 3B catalog for which non-zero values exist for the nine measured variables. This shows that only two out of the three basic quantities of duration, peak flux and fluence are independent, even if this relation is strongly affected by instrumental effects, and these two account for 91.6% of the total informat...

We have analyzed the evolution of the spectral hardness parameter, Epk (the maximum of the νFν spectrum) as a function of fluence in gamma-ray bursts. We fit 41 pulses within 26 bursts with the trend reported by Liang & Kargatis (1996) which found that Epk decays exponentially with respect to photon fluence Φ(t). We also fit these pulses with a slight modification of this trend, where Epk decay...

In photodynamic therapy (PDT) for glioma patients, apoptosis not necrosis is the desirable mode of cell death, as necrotic cell death induces late appearance of obstacles following PDT. We previously demonstrated that increase in both treatment dose of photosensitizer talaporfin sodium (NPe6) and laser fluence (laser energy density) changes the dominant cell death process from apoptosis to necr...
