BACKGROUND Colwellia psychrerythraea 34H is a psychrophilic bacterium able to produce docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Polyketide synthase pathway is assumed to be responsible for DHA production in marine bacteria. RESULTS Five pfa genes from strain 34H were confirmed to be responsible for DHA formation by heterogeneous expression in Escherichia coli. The complexity of fatty acid profile of this s...

BACKGROUND Endometriosis is a common chronic inflammation causing major problems including infertility. The role of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids as their potential anti-inflammatory effects in endometriosis needs to be further explored. The objective of this study was to compare serum phospholipid fatty acid profile in endometriosis patients with controls, and to explore the correlation of t...

The physicochemical properties and fatty acid composition of Attalea dubia (Mart.) Burret (indaiá) seed oil were investigated. The oil was extracted in a soxhlet apparatus using petroleum ether and evaluated for iodine, acid, peroxide, ester, and saponification values. The oil was also analyzed using infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The fatty acid profile of the oil was de...

A study was conducted to assess the physical characteristics, chemical composition and fatty acid profile of ostrich eggs. Fifteen eggs were collected randomly and used for the conduct of study. Studies revealed the average size to be 1435.1 ± 20.10 g, length 151.5 ± 0.83 mm, width 113.6 ± 0.34 mm, shell thickness 2.56 ± 1.12 mm and shape index 74.2 ± 0.82. Three principal components amounted t...

The effect of salting by different salt composition on fatty acid profile studied in hot smoked Black and Caspian Sea sprat, Clupeonella cultriventris. After initial prepare activities, samples were exposed to brining process within two salt concentrations including of 100 % NaCl (treatment 1 or T1) and 75 % NaCl- 25 % KCl (treatment 2 or T2) under 15% brine solution for 3 hrs. The smoking proc...

Two lactating dairy cows fitted with a rumen cannula received successively diets containing 0%, 20%, 34% and again 0% of wheat on a dry matter basis. After 5, 10 and 11 days, ruminal pH was measured between 8:00 and 16:00 hours, and milk was analysed for fat content and fatty acid profile. Diets with 20% and 34% wheat induced a marginal and a severe subacute ruminal acidosis respectively. After...

Inactivation of the MXAN_0853 gene blocked the production in Myxococcus xanthus of straight-chain fatty acids which otherwise represent 30% of total fatty acids. Despite this drastic change in the fatty acid profile, no change in phenotype could be observed, which contrasts with previous interpretations of the role of straight-chain fatty acids in the organism's development.

BACKGROUND Disarrangement in fatty acids and oxidative stress are features of cystic fibrosis. Cholesterol is very sensitive to oxidative stress. OBJECTIVES The objectives were to examine whether cholesterol oxidation products are altered in cystic fibrosis and whether they are associated with fatty acids and with characteristics of the disease state. DESIGN 7-Ketocholesterol and 7beta-hydr...
