ABSTRACT This paper describes how a model-based, feedforward control scheme can improve control performance over traditional PID and detect faults in the controlled process. The scheme uses static simulation models of the system under control to generate feedforward control action, which supplements a conventional PID feedback loop. The feedforward action reduces the effect of plant non-lineari...

Feedforward inhibition triggered by thalamocortical (TC) afferents sharpens onset responses and shapes receptive fields of pyramidal cells in auditory cortex (ACx). Previous studies focused only on interneurons located in and around layer IV in primary ACx, target of the dense thalamic projections from ventral medial geniculate. We investigated a population of feedforward interneurons located t...

It is often hypothesized that a crucial role for recurrent connections in the brain is to constrain the set of possible response patterns, thereby shaping the neural code. This implies the existence of neural codes that cannot arise solely from feedforward processing. We set out to find such codes in the context of one-layer feedforward networks and identified a large class of combinatorial cod...

Stimulus-specific adaptation (SSA) occurs when neurons decrease their responses to frequently-presented (standard) stimuli but not, or not as much, to other, rare (deviant) stimuli. SSA is present in all mammalian species in which it has been tested as well as in birds. SSA confers short-term memory to neuronal responses, and may lie upstream of the generation of mismatch negativity (MMN), an i...

Neuronal avalanches are a ubiquitous form of activity characterized by spontaneous bursts whose size distribution follows a power-law. Recent theoretical models have replicated power-law avalanches by assuming the presence of functionally feedforward connections (FFCs) in the underlying dynamics of the system. Accordingly, avalanches are generated by a feedforward chain of activation that persi...

This article reviews developments in feedforward control for Scanning Probe Microscopes (SPMs), which are key enabling tools in nanotechnologies. Feedforward control aids in precision positioning (at the nano scale) needed to achieve the current research goal of increasing SPM’s operating speed.

This paper studies the global robust output regulation of nonlinear strict feedforward systems. By utilizing the general framework for tackling the output regulation problem , the output regulation problem is converted into a global robust stabilization problem for a general class of nonlinear feedforward systems that is subject to both dynamic uncertainty and timevarying static uncertainty.

In this paper, we integrate transcriptional and posttranscriptional regulation into microRNAmediated incoherent feedforward motifs and analyze their dynamical behaviors and functions. The analysis show that the behaviors of the system are almost uninfluenced by the varying input in certain ranges and the introducing of delay and noise. The results indicate that microRNA-mediated incoherent feed...

In this paper, a general backpropagation learning framework for the training of feedforward neural networks is proposed. The convergence to global minimum under the framework is investigated using the Lyapunov stability theory. It is shown the existing feedforward neural networks training algorithms are special cases of the proposed framework.

Humans with spinal cord injury (SCI) modulate locomotor output in response to limb load. Understanding the neural control mechanisms responsible for locomotor adaptation could provide a framework for selecting effective interventions. We quantified feedback and feedforward locomotor adaptations to limb load modulations in people with incomplete SCI. While subjects airstepped (stepping performed...
