Closed intramedullary nailing of the femur is a complex technique but one that has considerable advantages. The choice of an appropriate point of entry into the proximal femur during introduction is vital, since an oblique insertion of the nail may lead to impaction of the implant and comminution of the proximal femoral fragment (Winquist, Hansen and Clawson 1984); this is particularly so in sm...

background: fractures of the femoral shaft are mostly the result of high-energy accidents that also cause multiple trauma injuries, in particular ipsilateral knee and hip injuries. the purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of injuries associated with femoral shaft fractures and how many of them were undetected. methods: we studied 148 patients (150 femoral shaft fractures) with...

BACKGROUND Some studies have previously shown that geometry of proximal femur can affect the probability of fracture and type of fracture. It happens since the geometry of the proximal femur determines how a force is applied to its different parts. In this study, we have compared proximal femur's geometric characteristics in femoral neck (FNF), intertrochanteric (ITF) and Subtrochanteric (STF) ...

UNLABELLED Long bone non-unions may lead to recurrent surgical procedures and in-hospital stays. Thus, restrictions of the health-related quality of life and of socioeconomic parameters might be expected. Knowledge of the impact on several parameters of professional life is sparse. Therefore, we analyzed the outcome in patients following non-unions of the tibial and femoral shaft after fracture...

A hip fracture dislocation with contralateral femur fracture is a rare combination. We report a case of neglected posterior dislocation of hip with Pipkins-II femoral head and medial condylar fractures associated with a contralateral femoral shaft fracture. Right hip joint was approached via the Kocher-Langenbeck, following reduction, femoral head fragments were fixed with two 4-mm cannulated c...

background at altnagelvin, a district general hospital in northern ireland, we have observed that a significant number of hip fracture admissions are later readmitted for treatment of other medical conditions. these readmissions place increasing stress on the already significant burden that orthopedic trauma poses on national health services. objectives the aim of this study was to review a ser...

The case reports of four patients with breakage of the intramedullary nail of the femur are presented. In all four patients the nail broke after consolidation of the fracture of the femoral shaft. All the nails broke at the same place: the junction between the round cross-section and the cloverleaf cross-section.

Pediatric femoral shaft fractures account for less than 2% of all fractures in children. However, these are the most common pediatric fractures necessitating hospitalization and are associated with prolonged hospital stay, prolonged immobilization and impose a significant burden on the healthcare system as well as caregivers. In this paper, the authors present a comprehensive review of epidemio...
