We report a case of incidentally diagnosed chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in a patient with glioblastoma, which responded completely following standard treatment of the glioblastoma with temozolomide and cranial irradiation. The patient remained without an evidence of CLL until his death from recurrent glioblastoma. Further study of temozolomide for the treatment of CLL is indicated.

Glioblastoma is a destructive form of brain tumor that kills most patients within two years of diagnosis.Treatments for glioblastoma include the usual options of surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy, but there is no effective treatment. The tumors are capable of spreading tendrils out into the brain and it can grow back in a matter of months after being removed. The cancer stem cell...

The activation of ion channels is crucial during cell movement, including glioblastoma cell invasion in the brain parenchyma. In this context, we describe for the first time the contribution of intermediate conductance Ca(2+)-activated K (IK(Ca)) channel activity in the chemotactic response of human glioblastoma cell lines, primary cultures, and freshly dissociated tissues to CXC chemokine liga...

Infiltration of the brain by glioblastoma cells reportedly requires Ca2+ signals and BK K+ channels that program and drive glioblastoma cell migration, respectively. Ionizing radiation (IR) has been shown to induce expression of the chemokine SDF-1, to alter the Ca2+ signaling, and to stimulate cell migration of glioblastoma cells. Here, we quantified fractionated IR-induced migration/brain inf...

A defining feature of the brain cancer glioblastoma is its highly invasive nature. When glioblastoma cells are isolated from patients using serum free conditions, they accurately recapitulate this invasive behaviour in animal models. The Rac subclass of Rho GTPases has been shown to promote invasive behaviour in glioblastoma cells isolated in this manner. However the guanine nucleotide exchange...

Glioblastoma is the most aggressive malignant brain tumor in humans and is difficult to cure using current treatment options. Hypoxic regions are frequently found in glioblastoma, and increased levels of hypoxia are associated with poor clinical outcomes of glioblastoma patients. Hypoxia plays important roles in the progression and recurrence of glioblastoma because of drug delivery deficiencie...

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small, noncoding RNAs that play a critical role in developmental and physiological processes and are implicated in the pathogenesis of several human diseases, including cancer. They function by regulating target gene expression post-transcriptionally. In this study, we examined the role of oncogenic mir-21 in the pathogenesis of glioblastoma, the most aggressive form of p...

Brain tumors classified as glioblastomas have proven refractory to treatment and generally result in death within a year of diagnosis. We used seven in vitro tests and one in vivo trial to compare the efficacy of nine different viruses for targeting human glioblastoma. Green fluorescent protein (GFP)-expressing vesicular stomatitis (VSV), Sindbis virus, pseudorabies virus (PRV), adeno-associate...

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most common and deadliest primary tumor in adults, with current treatments having limited specific and efficient delivery of therapeutic drugs to tumor sites or cells. Therefore, the development of alternative treatment options is urgently needed. Stem cells are considered as ideal cellular vehicles for gene therapy against glioblastoma. In this paper, we reviewed the ...

Glioblastoma is the most malignant and common primary brain tumor among all central nervous system neoplasm. Despite significant advances in surgical and imaging techniques as well as chemoand radio-therapeutic regimes, the survival of patients suffering with glioblastoma remains gloomy and ranges from 12-14 months. The development of a viable therapeutic strategy for glioblastoma, therefore, r...
