Let G be a linear algebraic group over a field K of characteristic 0. An integer m is called a global degree bound for G if for every linear representation V the invariant ring K[V ] is generated by invariants of degree at most m. We prove that if G has a global degree bound, then G must be finite. The converse is well known from Noether’s degree bound.

The authors regret that the affiliation “Department of Stem Cell Biology, Research Institute, National Center for Global Health and Medicine, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo 162-8655, Japan” for K. Takubo and H. Kobayashi was left out of the original publication. The authors also regret leaving out additional funding information for K. Takubo from MEXT and the National Center for Global Health and Medicine....

Assume that K is a perfect field of characteristic p > 0 that is complete with respect to an ultrametric valuation, and let X be a rigid analytic variety over K. Suppose that X is smooth and connected with respect to its Grothendieck topology. Let f be a (global) function on X the differential of which vanishes locally at some point of X; then f is the p power of a (global) function.

Let S be a nite set of nite and real local primes of a eld K. We prove two results. First, a PAC eld over K is already PAC over each nonempty S-open subset of K; if K is global, this implies that it also PAC over each separable Hilbert subset of K. Second, each PSC eld inside K tot;S has the S-density property.

Let k be a field of characteristic zero and k an algebraic closure of k. For a geometrically integral variety X over k , we write k (X) for the function field of X = X × k k. If X has a smooth k-point , the natural embedding of multiplicative groups k * ֒→ k (X) * admits a Galois-equivariant retraction. In the first part of the paper , over local and then over global fields , equivalent conditio...

The development of a global ethical system is desirable to fulfil the societal promise of the technology of the Internet. The author attempts to construct such a „pragmatic“ ethical system (in an age of relativism and ethical scepticism) using concepts drawn from a number of moral philosophers. The global ethics construct uses the quality of human rationality as a basis, co-existing with the es...

The Kauffman NK model is a stochastic combinatorial optimization model that has been used in theoretical biology, physics and management science to model complex systems with interacting components. It could be crudely described as an optimization problem to find a maximum valued (weighted) p-nary vector of length N with the value (weight) of a vector defined in terms of its components’ weights...

The Deformable part-based model (DPM) is a remarkable algorithm in object detection. In this paper, it is combined with the global information to improve its performance. The gist feature of an image is extracted to capture its global information. After that, the principal component analysis (PCA) is used to reduce the dimensionality of the gist feature. The k nearest neighbor distance (k-NND) ...

where α = max(|D(ui)|, |D(uj)|)+ ; is a small positive number. For notational simplicity, we denoteD(xi) = D(ui)xi, V (xi, xj) = V (ui, uj)xixj , V̂ (xi, xj) = V̂ (ui, uj)xixj , andR(xi, xj) = R(ui, uj)xixj . Lemma 1. If X∗ is the global optimum of E(X),R(xi, xj) < To,∀ xi ∼ xj , xi, xj ∈ X∗. Proof. If there exists a pair xi ∼ xj , xi, xj ∈ X∗ such thatR(xi, xj) ≥ To, then E(X∗) > 0 = E(0) (5) wh...
