BACKGROUND Selective atrioventricular nodal (AVN) vagal stimulation (AVN-VS) has emerged as a novel strategy for ventricular rate (VR) control in atrial fibrillation (AF). Although AVN-VS preserves the physiological ventricular activation sequence, the resulting rate is slow but irregular. In contrast, AVN ablation with pacemaker implantation produces retrograde activation (starting at the apex...

Transposons are found in virtually all organisms and play fundamental roles in genome evolution. They can also acquire new functions in the host organism and some have been developed as incisive genetic tools for transformation and mutagenesis. The hAT transposon superfamily contains members from the plant and animal kingdoms, some of which are active when introduced into new host organisms. We...

Antibodies produced in B10.D2 mice against soluble lymphocyte membrane antigens of B10.A (H-2(a)) mice reacted only with lymphocytes of the strains carrying the Ir(k) region, i.e., B10.A(2R), B10.K, B10.BR, B10.HTT, AQR, A.TE, C3H, and CBA; they did not react with cells of strains carrying different Ir regions, i.e., B10.A(4R), B10, B10.M, A.SW, DBA/1. It is therefore concluded that the antigen...

The utility of allogeneic stem cell transplantation for treating hematologic malignancies is enhanced by the graft vs. tumor (GvT) effect, but limited by graft vs. host disease (GvHD). Studies involving the inhibition of CD73 by genetic or pharmacologic means suggest that the levels of CD73-generated adenosine may be manipulated to control GvHD, while maintaining the GvT effect.

We previously demonstrated that in vivo engagement of CD137, a member of TNF receptor superfamily, can delete allorective CD4(+) T cells through the induction of activation-induced cell death (AICD) in chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD) and subsequently reverse established cGVHD. In this study, we further showed that agonistic anti-CD137 mAb was highly effective in triggering AICD of don...

Microalgal biomass grown in wastewater treatment raceway ponds may be valorised producing bioenergy through anaerobic digestion. However, pretreatment techniques seem to be necessary for enhancing microalgae methane yield. In this study, hydrothermal pretreatment was studied prior to batch and continuous reactors. The pretreatment increased organic matter solubilisation (8-13%), anaerobic diges...

The ability of parental to F(1) spleen grafts to regenerate was equal to that of parental to parental or to F(1) or F(1) spleen grafts. Cytotoxicity analysis of parental to F(1) spleen and thymic grafts indicated that these "regenerated grafts" were composed of F(1) lymphocytes. Regenerated parental to F(1) spleen grafts were incapable of producing runt disease in newborn F(1) animals.

C reactive protein concentration was measured serially in 19 patients with leukaemia after bone marrow transplantation. Six episodes of graft versus host disease occurred in the presence of fever but with no evidence of infection, and these were associated with C reactive protein concentrations as high as 200 mg/l. C reactive protein values were also increased in 12 febrile episodes associated ...

A strong female predominance is a well-recognized feature of human lupus. The mechanism by which sex influences disease expression and severity is not fully understood. To address this question, we used the parent-into-F(1) (p-->F(1)) model of chronic graft-vs-host disease (cGVHD) in which lupus-like humoral autoimmunity and renal disease are induced in normal F(1) mice. An advantage of this mo...
