Quantum states in the Earth’s gravitational field were observed, when ultra-cold neutrons fall under gravity. The experimental results can be described by the quantum mechanical scattering model as it is presented here. We also discuss other geometries of the experimental setup which correspond to the absence or the reversion of gravity. Since our quantum mechanical model describes, particularl...
It is shown that during the motion of two initially gravitationally bound spherical shells, consisting of point particles moving along ballistic trajectories, one of the shell may be expelled to infinity at subrelativistic speed v exp ≤ 0.25c. The problem is solved in Newtonian gravity. Motion of two intersecting shells in the case when they do not runaway shows a chaotic behaviour. We hope tha...
Despite of still bothering uncertainties and ongoing controversy, the convectively supported neutrino-heating mechanism (1) must be considered as a promising way to explain supernova explosions of massive stars. Neutrinos drive the evolution of the collapsing stellar core and of the forming neutron star and dominate the event energetically by carrying away about 99% of the gravitational binding...
The capture of cold dark matter species, and especially primordial black holes, during the formation of gravitationally bound objects is analyzed. It is shown that the best conditions for an efficient gravitational capture were at the epoch preceding the galaxy formation, when the first astrophysical objects with masses of the order of Jeans mass 105–106 M were forming. Black hole haloes around...
Black hole event horizons, causally separating the external universe from compact regions of spacetime, are one of the most exotic predictions of General Relativity (GR). Until recently, their compact size has prevented efforts to study them directly. Here we show that recent millimeter and infrared observations of Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky ...
We apply the method of matched asymptotic expansions to analyse whether cosmological variations in physical ‘constants’ and scalar fields are detectable, locally, on the surface of local gravitationally bound systems such as planets and stars, or inside virialised systems like galaxies and clusters. We assume spherical symmetry and derive a sufficient condition for the local time variation of t...
We report the results of a submillimeter dust continuum survey of the protoclusters NGC 2068 and NGC 2071 in Orion B carried out at 850μm and 450μm with SCUBA on JCMT. The mapped region is ∼ 32′×18′ in size (∼ 4 pc × 2 pc) and consists of filamentary dense cores which break up into small-scale (∼ 5 000 AU) fragments, including 70 starless condensations and 5 circumstellar envelopes/disks. The s...
A massive gravitationally bound object with a radius r ≤ 2GM/c 2 , which occurs in the non-singular version of the nonsymmetric gravitational theory (NGT), replaces the black hole in Einstein gravity theory. This object is kept stable by the attractive and repulsive forces generated by NGT, as well as standard matter pressures, and is called a superdense object (SDO). The luminosity of gravitat...
The stages that follow the merging of two neutron stars are discussed. It is shown that if a rapidly rotating gravitationally bound object is formed after the merging (a spinar or a massive neutron star), then the characteristic time of its evolution is determined by a fundamental value tspin = κ m2pe 2h̄ mec 5/2G1/2 ≈ 7 · 10s · κ , where the dimensionless value κ depends on the exact equation o...
We report on the 2. 5 (400 pc) resolution CO (J = 1 → 0) observations covering the whole length of the bar in the strongly barred late-type spiral galaxy NGC 7479. CO emission is detected only along a dust lane that traverses the whole length of the bar, including the nucleus. The emission is strongest in the nucleus. The distribution of emission is clumpy along the bar outside the nucleus, and...
