Hillman EMC. 2017 Correction to 'Wide-field optical mapping of neural activity and brain haemodynamics: considerations and novel approaches'. After publication, a mistake was identified in equation (2.7); the denominators in the equation should have a minus sign rather than a plus. The corrected equation is provided here.
Erythrocyte acetylcholinesterase and plasma cholinesterase was estimated in 50 normal pregnant women and 22 age matched normal non-pregnant women. Plasma cholinesterase was significantly decreased while erythrocyte cholinesterase was significantly increased during pregnancy. These changes may be related to altered haemodynamics and or other inter-related changes occurring in pregnancy.
Different patient positions are required to provide access for different surgical procedures. Each position has implications for ventilation and haemodynamics, as well as exposing patients to possible complications such as nerve injury and pressure sores. The anaesthetist plays an important role in minimising the risks associated with these positions. Common positions include supine, lithotomy,...
BACKGROUND Left ventricular hypertrophy is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Previous studies have shown that patients with left ventricular hypertrophy develop electrocardiographic changes and left ventricular dysfunction during acute hypotension, and suggest that the lower end of autoregulation may be shifted upwards. AIM To measure coronary blood ...
The blood oxygen-level dependent (BOLD) response to a neural stimulus is analysed using the transfer function derived from a physiologically based poroelastic model of cortical tissue. The transfer function is decomposed into components that correspond to distinct poles, each related to a response mode with a natural frequency and dispersion relation; together these yield the total BOLD respons...
We read with great interest the excellent review article on drug therapy in chronic heart failure (CHF) by McKenzie and Cowley. The authors discuss the haemodynamic, neurohormonal, and sympathetic nervous system mechanisms contributing to heart failure, but maintain a cardiocentric view in explaining how these three mechanisms together lead to the deterioration of the failing heart and its haem...
Fibronectin (FN) assembly and fibrillogenesis are critically important in both development and the adult organism, but their importance in vascular functions is not fully understood. Here we identify a novel pathway by which haemodynamic forces regulate FN assembly and fibrillogenesis during vascular remodelling. Induction of disturbed shear stress in vivo and in vitro resulted in complex FN fi...
resulted in a more pronounced depletion of fibrinogen levels (up to 70%) than a single session. Both whole blood and plasma viscosity were significantly improved by repeated aphereses. During combined fibrinogen apheresis and specialized multimodal wound care 3 out of 4 patients showed improved wound healing. After termination of apheresis 1 patient underwent surgery for diabetic foot syndrome....
Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response triggered by microbial infection that can cause cardiovascular collapse, insufficient tissue perfusion and multi-organ failure. The cation channel transient receptor potential vanilloid 4 (TRPV4) is expressed in vascular endothelium and causes vasodilatation, but excessive TRPV4 activation leads to profound hypotension and circulatory collapse key feat...
BACKGROUND A concentrate for bicarbonate haemodialysis acidified with citrate instead of acetate has been marketed in recent years. The small amount of citrate used (one-fifth of the concentration adopted in regional anticoagulation) protects against intradialyser clotting while minimally affecting the calcium concentration. The aim of this study was to compare the impact of citrate- and acetat...
