Highly stable room-temperature, mid-IR, GaSb-based laser diodes have been characterized at various temperatures and driver currents. Up to 54 mW of output power was demonstrated in a 3150- to 3180-nm-wavelength range with <20-nm FWHM spectral width.

We demonstrate for the first time (to our knowledge) characterization of ultrashort IR pulses by self-referenced spectral interferometry. Both sub-55-fs pulses from 1.4 μm to 2 μm and broadband 2.5-cycle pulses at 1.65 μm (13 fs FWHM) are characterized.

Multi-beam confocal microscopy without any physical pinhole was demonstrated. As a key device, a custom CMOS image sensor realizing a focal-plane pinhole array effect by special pixel addressing and discarding of the unwanted photocarriers was developed. The axial resolution in the confocal mode measured by FWHM for a planar mirror was 8.9 μm, which showed that the confocality has been achieved...

An asynchronous 10 Gb/s Ethernet packet with maximum packet size of 1518 bytes is synchronized and retimed to a master clock with 200 kHz frequency offset using a time lens. The NRZ packet is simultaneously converted into an RZ packet, then further pulse compressed to a FWHM of 400 fs and finally time-division multiplexed with a serial 1.28 Tb/s signal including a vacant time slot, thus forming...

In this article I argue that the concern with gender relations and the challenges female activists were facing foreclosed any discussion of the transformation activism signalled for male comrades, and thus for wider society. I am particularly interested in men’s own views of their social roles and personal predicaments as the more subtle processes of transformation in the lives of male activist...

Some numbers that are given on page 15771 do not correspond to the velocity distributions shown in Fig. 4. In the third paragraph of this page it should read ‘‘The distribution has a width (FWHM) of 4.8 m s 1 and 1.4 m s 1 in the longitudinal and transverse direction, respectively. The velocity distribution can also be expressed as a speed ratio of S = 235 (or a temperature of T = 15.0 mK) and ...

Most analyses of the East Asian financial crisis have focused on its causes and the links between currency and banking crises. However a related question is what happens in the aftermath of a crisis? What factors determine the path of an economy in the post-devaluation phase? Does it swiftly bounce back, with the crisis being followed by a period of economic recovery, or does it face a period o...

The ability to manage extreme disasters of any type and their aftermath has been observed to be a challenge for government. This is because extreme disasters are known to disrupt and harm social, economic, business, human welfare and the environment when preparation for them are inadequate or ineffective. Complex, extreme or catastrophic events have inherent characteristics which put a consider...

In this research, we examine the relationship between power and three characteristics of construal—abstraction, valence, and certainty—in individuals’ verbatim reactions to the events of September 11, 2001 and during the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks. We conceptualize power as a form of social distance and find that position power (but not expert power) was positively associated ...

In an exclusive measurement of the reaction gammad-->K(+)K(-)pn, a narrow peak that can be attributed to an exotic baryon with strangeness S=+1 is seen in the K(+)n invariant mass spectrum. The peak is at 1.542+/-0.005 GeV/c(2) with a measured width of 0.021 GeV/c(2) FWHM, which is largely determined by experimental mass resolution. The statistical significance of the peak is (5.2+/-0.6)sigma. ...
