The discovery of the spiral bacterium Helicobacter pylori and its causative role in gastric disease in humans has brought a dramatic change to gastroenterology. Although spiral bacteria have been known for more than a century to infect the stomachs of dogs and cats, recent research has been conducted mainly in the wake of interest in H. pylori. H. pylori has not been found in dogs and only very...

AIM The aim of present study was the assessment of association of helicobacter pylori of dental plaque and stomach in a more homogenous population and also to determine the diagnostic value of dental plaque for gastric infection. MATERIALS AND METHODS Based on the results of Rapid urease test (RUT) on specimens from gastric antrum, 88 patients with symptoms of dyspepsia were assigned into two...

An association between Helicobacter infection and autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) in children was investigated. The prevalence of antibodies to H. pylori did not differ between the AIH and the control group, (22% versus 14%), and antibodies to non-gastric Helicobacter were not detected in either group. H. pylori DNA was found in two AIH liver tissues, but Helicobacter was not cultured from any sample.

Clarithromycin-resistant Helicobacter pylori (CRHP) is increasing worldwide, especially in children. We report a family case in which both the mother and child were infected with CRHP. DNA analysis revealed that all of the mother's and daughter's isolates were indistinguishable, suggesting that the same CRHP strain spread between the family members. The spread of CRHP within families may be inc...

We surveyed national Helicobacter pylori diagnostic testing practices and diagnoses using commercial and Medicare medical claims data from Optum Labs (Cambridge, MA). Serologic testing for antibodies to H. pylori remains the most commonly ordered diagnostic test despite recent expert recommendations. Changes in reimbursement for serologic testing will likely drive future provider ordering pract...

The Leifson staining method was used to diagnose Helicobacter pylori infection and was compared to histology, culture, and the rapid urease test (RUT). Histology gave the best sensitivity (98%), compared to Leifson staining (97%), culture (92%), and RUT (85%) (P < 0.005). Leifson staining is a sensitive, rapid, economical method for diagnosis of H. pylori infection in dyspeptic patients.

The accuracy of a nested PCR in gastric DNA obtained by a string test for the diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori infection in asymptomatic children was 94.0%. The cagA-positive toxigenic vacAs1m1 strains were the most prevalent strains, indicating that this population is colonized early by the strains associated with gastric cancer.

OBJECTIVES A number of studies have evaluated Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection in the Caribbean. However to date there is no available epidemiological data on its occurrence in the Bahamas. Therefore, we determined the seroprevalence of H. pylori in a healthy adult population in Nassau, Bahamas. METHODS A prevalence study was conducted using volunteer blood donors to the blood bank a...

Objective(s):Helicobacter pylori infection occurs worldwide, but the prevalence of this infection varies greatly among different countries and population groups. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of anti-Helicobacter pylori and anti-cytotoxin-associated gene A (CagA) antibodies in asymptomatic healthy population in the center of Iran and to investigate the relation with ...
