We have studied the thrombocytopenia of lymphoproliferative disorders using a measurement of membrane-bound IgG by an antiglobulin consumption assay. Nine patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and thrombocytopenia had increased membrane-bound IgG. Two patients with non-Hodgkins lymphoma and 1 patient with Hodgkins disease also had thrombocytopenia and increased membrane-bound IgG. Fi...

Plants are one of the natural sources of bioactive molecules with potential abilities against different stress conditions. During pathogenic exposure, an array of biologically active molecules like reactive oxygen intermediates, phytoalexins and defense peptides are synthesized as measure of plant resistance to combat the intensifying conditions. Such molecules play a key role in advancement in...

The centipede Scolopendra subpinipes mutilans is a medicinally important arthropod species. However, its transcriptome is not currently available and transcriptome analysis would be useful in providing insight into a molecular level approach. Hence, we performed de novo RNA sequencing of S. subpinipes mutilans using next-generation sequencing. We generated a novel peptide (scolopendrasin II) ba...

A new method to quantitate circulating cells secreting immunoglobulin (Ig) of each type of the different classes by hemolytic plaque technique is reported. The ratio of kappa (k)-secreting cells and lambda(lambda)-secreting cells of the different lg classes in normal individuals is almost equal to that of kappa:lambda light chains in corresponding serum lg class, whereas the ratio in plasma cel...

In vitro activity of erythrocyte glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) does not always correlate with in vivo hemolytic manifestations. Many of these non-correlations are reviewed and can now be explained on the basis of altered substrate affinity and/or altered inhibition by intracellular metabolites. These alterations are not detected by standard assay conditions. The influence of a youn...

BACKGROUND Escherichia coli O157:H7 is an enteric pathogen which can be frequently found asymptomatically in ruminant mammals, but can cause diseases from mild diarrhea to hemolytic uremic syndrome in humans. METHODS We developed fluorescent amplification-based specific hybridization (FLASH-PCR) assay to detect the Stx-encoding gene Stx-1 of E. coli O157:H7. RESULT PCR product of 336 bp was...

Drug induced autoimmune hemolytic anemia is a well-known complication of drug therapy but it is often misdiagnosed. Drug induced autoimmune hemolytic anemia is difficult to differantiate from classical autoimmune hemolytic anemia. Here, we have reported a case with autoimmune hemolytic anemia might be caused by drugs such as teicoplanin, imipenem and amphotericin B. In our case, on the fifteent...

Whole complement and component titers were measured in patients with acute leukemia, Hodgkin's disease, and sarcoma. Serum samples were obtained from 42 consecutive patients and 11 healthy control subjects. Sera were frozen and maintained at -70 degrees until analyzed by hemolytic assay. Titers were normalized using a titer obtained from a single source of pooled human serum analyzed simultaneo...

Alpha-hemolytic-like activity from Campylobacter jejuni was clearly apparent when the medium pH ranged from 6.0 to 6.5, but the hemolytic zones disappeared when the pH of the medium increased. Beta-hemolytic-like activity just beneath the bacterial growth appeared after prolonged incubation. The hemolytic activity was not influenced by the species of blood.
