This is the proceedings article for the concluding lecture of the 1999 High Energy Physics Conference of the European Physical Society. In this article, I review a number of topics that were highlighted at the meeting and have more general importance in high energy physics. The major topics discussed are (1) precision electroweak physics, (2) CP violation, (3) new directions in QCD, (4) supersy...
The broad coverage of the search for the Higgs boson in the mainstream media is a relative novelty for high energy physics (HEP) research, whose achievements have traditionally been limited to scholarly literature. This paper illustrates the results of a scientometric analysis of HEP computing in scientific literature, institutional media and the press, and a comparative overview of similar met...
The 9th Heterogeneous Computing Workshop (HCW 2000) is a forum to discuss latest ndings in heterogeneous computing and promising work in progress. Heterogeneous computing systems range from diverse elements within a single computer to coordinated, geographically distributed machines with di erent architectures. A heterogeneous computing system provides a variety of capabilities that can be orch...
This paper defines a formal classification of multidatabase languages into five levels of database integration with increasing degree of global control and decreasing degree of local autonomy. First, the fundamental interoperability mechanisms are identified for each of these levels. Their consequences on local aut o n o m y as well as implementation draw-backs are discussed. Second, various mu...
We discuss CP violation in the context of the minimal SUSY extension of the standard model as well as in a generic low-energy SUSY model. After analyzing the SUSY contributions to the observed CP violation in the kaon system, we emphasize the prospects for disentangling SUSY loop contributions from pure SM effects in B physics.
We consider representations of quadratic R-matrix algebras by means of certain first order ordinary differential operators. These operators turn out to act as parameter shifting operators on the Gauss hypergeometric function and its limit cases and on classical orthogonal polynomials. The relationship with W. Miller’s treatment of Lie algebras of first order differential operators will be discu...
One of the main tasks in developing distributed collaborative systems is to support synchronization processes. The Coupled Objects paradigm has emerged as a way to easily support these processes by dynamically coupling arbitrary user interface objects between heterogeneous applications. In this article we present an architecture for developing distributed collaborative applications using HTML5 ...
The problem of mapping tasks and communications onto multiple machines and networks in a heterogeneous computing environment has been shown to be NP complete. Therefore, the development of heuristic techniques to find nearoptimal solutions is required. Many different types of mapping heuristics have been developed in recent years. However, selecting the best heuristic to use in any given scenar...
In this talk we characterize the transonic stationary solutions of the hydrodynamic escape problem (HEP), which is significant on studying the evolution of atmospheres of planets. The characterization is established by the geometric singular perturbation method (GSP) on the wind solution of HEP. We will discuss the existence and non-existence of the adiabatic wind solution with or without heat ...
