Computer-assisted surgery (CAS) has been introduced in hip replacement to improve the precision of the acetabular and femoral components and hopefully to improve prosthesis longevity and biomechanics. Likewise the concept of shorter “neck-sparing” femoral stems has been gaining in popularity. These new designs preserve more native bone in the femoral neck of the patient during femoral preparati...
BACKGROUND To study whether thyroid function was associated with risk of hip or knee replacement due to primary osteoarthritis. METHODS In a prospective cohort study, data from the second and third survey of the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study were linked to the Norwegian Arthroplasty Register in order to identify total hip or knee replacement as a result of primary osteoarthritis. RESULTS Amon...
We measured the plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D(3) (25(OH)D(3)) levels in 62 consecutive Caucasian patients undergoing total hip replacement for osteoarthritis. The patients were divided into two groups based on whether they were vitamin D sufficient or deficient. The groups were matched for age, gender and the American Society of Anaesthesiologists (ASA) grade. The prevalence of vitamin D deficienc...
We report a case of iatrogenic sciatic nerve injury caused by pre-operative intraneural injection of local anaesthetic at total hip replacement. To our knowledge, this is unreported in the orthopaedic literature. We consider sacral nerve blockade in patients undergoing total hip replacement to be undesirable and present guidelines for the management of peri-operative sciatic nerve injury.
Fracture of a modern ceramic head component in total hip replacement is an uncommon but catastrophic complication. Hence, the occurrence of a second ceramic head fracture in the same hip replacement of an individual represents a perishingly rare event. We present the case as a means of highlighting potential risk factors for ceramic head fracture and suggest possible management strategies in su...
In this study, we retrospectively reviewed 70 patients who had a one-stage bilateral total hip replacement in our institution, between 1992 and 1998. Different variables were considered such as gender, age, length of hospital stay, pre-operative diagnosis, duration of the operation and anesthesia, type of prosthesis, complications and amount of blood loss, pre- and postoperative range of motion...
In this study we hypothesised that anxiety/depression, one of five dimensions in the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) measurement tool EQ-5D, could predict outcome after total hip replacement surgery. Pre-operative and one-year post-operative data from the Swedish Hip Arthroplasty Register, including 6158 patients with primary osteoarthritis of the hip, were analysed. In order to examine ...
The following issue brief is a shortened version of a full-length article published by the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery (" Variability in Costs associated with Total Hip and knee replacement Implants. The US health care system is struggling to moderate growth in spending while maintaining quality-improving innovation in diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. attention is being focused o...
