Social parasites exploit the socially managed resources of their host's society. Inquiline social parasites are dependent on their host throughout their life cycle, and so many of the traits inherited from their free-living ancestor are removed by natural selection. One trait that is commonly lost is the worker caste, the functions of which are adequately fulfilled by host workers. The few inqu...

The rapid evolution of the HIV genome is influenced in part by host selection pressure, which may cause parallel evolution among strains under shared selection pressures. To understand the mechanisms behind HIV-host immune escape across host populations, researchers have compared signatures of positive selection pressure on HIV codons across HIV subtypes and across phylogenetic groups of isolat...

The rate at which mutations occur in nature is itself under natural selection. While a general reduction of mutation rates is advantageous for species inhabiting constant environments, higher mutation rates can be advantageous for those inhabiting fluctuating environments that impose on-going directional selection. Analogously, species involved in antagonistic co-evolutionary arms races, such a...

We report on the results of a search for Lyα emission from the host galaxy of the z = 2.140 GRB 011211 and other galaxies in its surrounding field. We detect Lyα emission from the host as well as from six other galaxies in the field. The restframe equivalent width of the Lyα line from the GRB 011211 host is about 21 Å. This is the fifth detection of Lyα emission out of five possible detections ...

Evolutionary dynamics shape the living world around us. At the centre of every evolutionary process is a population of reproducing individuals. The structure of that population affects evolutionary dynamics. The individuals can be molecules, cells, viruses, multicellular organisms or humans. Whenever the fitness of individuals depends on the relative abundance of phenotypes in the population, w...

The Rickettsiaceae is a family of intracellular bacterial symbionts that includes both vertically transmitted parasites that spread by manipulating the reproduction of their host (Wolbachia in arthropods) and horizontally transmitted parasites (represented by Cowdria ruminantium), and mutualists (Wolbachia pipientis in nematode worms). We have investigated the nature of natural selection acting...
