We consider the hydrodynamic modes for dense trapped ultracold gases, where the interparticle distance is comparable to the scattering length. We show that the experimental determination of the hydrodynamic mode frequencies allows one to obtain quite directly the equation of state of a dense gas. As an example, we investigate the case of two equal fermionic populations in different hyperfine st...
We experimentally investigate the spin dynamics of one and two neutral atoms strongly coupled to a high finesse optical cavity. We observe quantum jumps between hyperfine ground states of a single atom. The interaction-induced normal-mode splitting of the atom-cavity system is measured via the atomic excitation. Moreover, we observe the mutual influence of two atoms simultaneously coupled to th...
This paper expands the established four-state model of spin-correlated radical pairs (SCRPs) to include local nuclear spins which are ubiquitous in real-world systems and essential for the radical pair intersystem crossing (RP-ISC) mechanism. These nuclei are coupled to the unpaired electron spins by hyperfine interaction and split their electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) lines. Rather than ...
The Σc − Σc and Σ∗b − Σb hyperfine mass splittings are computed in the Skyrme model. The hyperfine splittings are suppressed by both 1/Nc and by 1/mQ, where Nc is the number of colors and mQ is the mass of the heavy quark. The Σc, Σ ∗ c , Σb, Σ ∗ b , and Λb masses are predicted in terms of the known values of the Λc, D, D , B and B masses. UCSD/PTH 92-26 hep-ph/9208238 August 1992 1 Baryons con...
In this dissertation I present a variety of experiments on collisions between ultra-cold rubidium atoms. These collisions take place in light-force atom traps, where temperatures below 1 mK are reached. At these low temperatures weak, long-range interactions between the atoms are important, and collision times are long. Consequently, the absorption and spontaneous emission of photons plays an i...
The electron and nuclear spin degrees of freedom in two-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots are studied as important resources for such fields as spintronics and quantum information. The coupling of electron spins to their orbital motion, via the spinorbit interaction, and to nuclear spins, via the hyperfine interaction, are important for understanding spin-dynamics in quantum dot systems. T...
