KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE We report a patient with multiple myeloma and chronic kidney disease who presented with severe hyperphosphatemia in the outpatient clinic without any related symptoms. Initial differential diagnosis: Tumor lysis syndrome or chronic kidney disease. Further work-up revealed pseudohyperphosphatemia. In general, treatment is not necessary if the true phosphate level is within t...
A case of antiepileptic-induced vitamin D deficiency, who presented with hypocalcemia, hyperphosphatemia with increased tubular reabsorption of phosphate mimicking pseudohypoparathyroidism type 2, is reported. He showed remarkable improvement with calcium and vitamin D treatment with normalisation of serum calcium and phosphate with reestablishment of phosphaturic response.
Calciphylaxis is a clinical syndrome of arteriolar calcification with resultant tissue necrosis, most commonly seen in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on dialysis. This condition carries a high mortality rate mainly due to infection. Helpful interventions include adequate dialytic therapy, medical management of hyperparathyroidism, hyperphosphatemia, and intravenous sodium thiosulf...
OBJECTIVES Hyperphosphatemia is a common and harmful condition in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). We determined the cost-effectiveness of the noncalcium-based phosphate binder lanthanum carbonate (LC) as second-line treatment of hyperphosphatemia after therapy failure with calcium-based binders (CB). METHODS Two CKD populations were modeled: 1) predialysis CKD patients and 2) inci...
