Phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging is subject to numerous sources of error, which decrease clinical confidence in the reported measures. This work outlines how stationary perivascular fat can impart a significant chemical shift induced phase-contrast magnetic resonance imaging measurement error using computational simulations, in vitro, and in vivo experiments. This chemical shift error ...

BACKGROUND Diffuse lamellar keratitis (DLK) is a relatively new syndrome that is increasingly being reported after LASIK. We have observed that a hyperopic shift may be associated with the occurrence of this diffuse lamellar keratitis. CASE PRESENTATION A 26 year old man developed bilateral diffuse lamellar keratitis (DLK) following myopic LASIK. The residual refractive error was +0.5D OD and...

We investigated the effect of deformation of natural rubbers (NR) resulting from the high centrifugal pressure of fast magicangle spinning (MAS) on 13C NMR spectra. The solid state 13C MAS NMR spectrum with high-power 1H dipolar decoupling (DD) of NR presents liquid-like, very narrow signals (full width at half height, FWHH, is less than 10 Hz). However, the static state 13C DD NMR spectrum of ...

By using first principles calculations, it is found that the noble metal atoms Ag, Au and Cu would like to occupy the vacancy sites of the W(0 0 1) or Mo(0 0 1) surface to form the substitutional surface alloys, despite the fact that they do not like to form alloy in the bulk. The electronic local function (ELF) for these substitutional surface alloys shows that there is no obvious chemical bon...

In terrestrial ecosystems, fungi are the major agents of decomposition processes and nutrient cycling and of plant nutrient uptake. Hence, they have a vital impact on ecosystem processes and the terrestrial carbon cycle. Changes in productivity and phenology of fungal fruit bodies can give clues to changes in fungal activity, but understanding these changes in relation to a changing climate is ...

The activity history of a given neuron has been suggested to influence its future responses to synaptic input in one prominent model of experience-dependent synaptic plasticity proposed by Bienenstock, Cooper, and Munro (BCM theory). Because plasticity of synaptic plasticity (i.e., metaplasticity) is similar in concept to aspects of the BCM proposal, we have tested the possibility that a form o...

We study the shear-flow effects on phase separation of entangled polymer blends by incorporating into the chemical potential a nonequilibrium contribution due to the flow. The results are compared with those of a previous analysis by other authors which did not modify the chemical potential but used a different assumption for the stress tensor of the blend.

Solvent-induced shift of optical transition lines is traditionally described by the Lippert-McRae equation given in terms of the Onsager theory for dipole solvation. It splits the overall shift into the equilibrium solvation by induced dipoles and the reaction field by the permanent dipoles in equilibrium with the chromophore in the ground state. We have reconsidered this classical problem from...

Introduction: A recent study suggested that water macromolecule exchange (WME) processes can contribute to the in vivo gray matter (GM) and white matter (WM) contrast in high field phase imaging [1]. Due to the complex nature of macromolecule-water interaction, bovine serum albumin (BSA) was used as a model system to demonstrate this effect. It is assumed that the WME interaction depends on the...
