The flow and handling of granular materials is of major importance to many industries. Yet despite efforts over several decades, the modeling of such flows has achieved only modest success. Dense gravity-driven flows in hoppers have been often modeled as elastic-plastic continua, for example. In this picture, the granular material flows as a plastic with a frictional yield condition, and deform...

It is well known that buckling instabilities occur when elastic solids are subject to compressive stresses. However, this does not preclude the occurrence of instabilities in systems subject to global tensile loads. Such tensile instabilities may be caused by certain discontinuities (geometrical or material) which re-distribute the stresses applied on its boundary, generating local compressive ...

Parametric instabilities have long been studied as a potentially limiting effect in high-power interferometric gravitational wave detectors. Until now, however, these instabilities have never been observed in a kilometer-scale interferometer. In this Letter, we describe the first observation of parametric instability in a gravitational wave detector, and the means by which it has been removed a...

Superfluids with a tendency towards periodic order have both phonon- and rotonlike spectra. We show that magnetoroton softening occurs in 87Rb spinor condensates. A rich variety of dynamical instabilities emerges as a function of the magnetic field orientation and strength of the quadratic Zeeman shift. These instabilities are driven by an effective dipolar interaction modified dramatically by ...

Rabbits trained to discriminate vertical vs. oblique striations are unable to discriminate angular differences of 5 degrees. In the present study the instabilities around the roll axis of the eyes were measured during visual discrimination. The results indicate that these instabilities are one of the causes of the rabbit's inability to discriminate angular differences of 5 degrees.

We review recent results on traffic instabilities. An innovative approach to traffic dynamics is proposed. The self-organized oscillatory and chaotic behavior of traffic flow are identified and formulated. The results agree with the empirical findings for freeway traffic and with the previous numerical simulations. Thus the work gives a justification for observed and simulated traffic instabili...

Although the luminosity growth for Tevatron Run II was slower than expected, steady growth of luminosity has been demonstrated during the last three years with the peak luminosity of 1.02×10 cms achieved in July 2004. Suppression of instabilities has been a valuable contributor to the luminosity growth. This report discusses the transverse instabilities in the Tevatron and Recycler.

Situations where a group of individuals takes collective decisions are subject to instabilities when subgroups may form. In this paper, we analyze how a hierarchical organization avoids such instabilities, while distributing some power among the subordinates and the subgroups they may form. Incentives to reveal private information are also studied. DELTA, 48 Boulevard Jourdan, Paris, 75014 Fran...

We describe the formation of spatial structures generated by diffusive instabilities in bistable systems. The coupling between the different spatial modes emanating from the two homogeneous steady states can then give rise to self-parametric instabilities favoring the occurrence of resonant rhombic or quasiperiodic structures such as superlattices or quasicrystalline patterns.

We examine the hydrodynamics of a granular gas using numerical simulation. We demonstrate the appearance of shearing and clustering instabilities predicted by linear stability analysis, and show that their appearance is directly related to the inelasticity of collisions in the material. We discuss the rate at which these instabilities arise and the manner in which clusters grow and merge.
