Dealing with user preferences is becoming a widespread issue in novel data-intensive application domains, such as electronic catalogs, e-commerce, multimedia databases, and real estates. Given a set of preferences, an important problem is to efficiently determine which are the “best” objects, according to such preferences. In this paper we assume that preferences are expressed in a qualitative ...

Available resources can often be limited with regard to the number of demands. In this paper we propose an approach for solving this problem using the mechanisms of multi-item auctions for allocating the resources to a set of software agents. We consider the resource allocation problem as a market with vendor and buyer agents participating in a multi-item auction. The agents exhibit different a...

We present a method for detecting action items in spontaneous meeting speech. Using a supervised approach incorporating prosodic, lexical and structural features, we can classify such items with a high degree of accuracy. We also examine how well various feature subclasses can perform this task on their own.

Monitoring frequently occuring items is a recurring task in a variety of applications. Although a number of solutions have been proposed there has been few to address the problem in a distributed networked environment. Most past solutions relied upon approximating results to lower communication overhead. In this paper we introduce a new algorithm designed for continuously tracking frequent item...

In this paper, we study the problem of assigning indivisible items under the following constraints: 1) each item belongs to one of the p categories, 2) each agent is required to get exactly one item from each category, 3) no free disposal, and 4) no monetary transfer. We first characterize serial dictatorships by a minimal set of 3 properties: strategy-proofness, non-bossiness, and categorywise...
