A comparative efficacy of piperazine, albendazole and ivermectin against natural infection of Toxocara vitulorum based on faecal egg count in calves was studied. Early recovery was found with piperazine than with either albendazole or ivermectin. However, all the three drugs were effective against ascariasis in cattle calves.

Ivermectin (MK-0933, 22, 23-dihydroderivative of amvermectin B1) is a synthetic derivative of a broadspectrum antiparasitic class of macro cyclic lactones known as avermectins. Avermectin B was first isolated by fermentation of a soil microorganism, the actinomycete Streptomyces avermitilis. Ivermectin has a structure similar to that of macrolide antibiotics, but without antibacterial activity ...

We describe 2 patients with severe orbital myiasis due to Cochliomyia hominivorax (of the order Diptera and the family Calliphoridae) who had underlying skin carcinomas and were treated with oral ivermectin and debridement. We suggest that ivermectin plays an important role in the treatment of severe cases of myiasis.

To assess the effect of ivermectin on the morbidity caused by hookworm-related cutaneous larva migrans in patients in hyperendemic areas, we treated 92 patients (with 441 tracks in total) from Manaus, Brazil, with single-dose ivermectin (200 µg/kg). Four weeks later, patients had 60 tracks, and the associated morbidity improved significantly.

P-glycoprotein (P-gp) is encoded by the ABCB1 gene and acts as an efflux pump for xenobiotics. In the Border Collie, a nonsense mutation caused by a 4-base pair deletion in the ABCB1 gene is associated with a premature stop to P-gp synthesis. In this study, we examined the full-length coding sequence of the ABCB1 gene in an ivermectin-sensitive Border Collie that lacked the aforementioned delet...

Specific cellular binding proteins for retinol and retinoic acid from mammalian and avian species may mediate the action of retinoids in the control of epithelial differentiation, growth and tumorigenesis. Parasite retinol-binding protein (PRBP) and parasite retinoic acid-binding protein (PRABP) isolated and characterized from parasitic worms of the family Filarioidea might be involved in some ...
