Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine (TE/RM) represents a broad spectrum of cell and biomaterial based approaches aiming to repair, augment and regenerate diseased tissues and organs. The successful recent clinical implantation of tissue engineered trachea, bladder and bladder derivative (Neo-Urinary ConduitTM) has highlighted the emergence of common methodological frameworks for the de...

The neomycin phosphotransferase gene (neo) from Transposon Tn5 is active in Gram-negative bacteria but silent in B. subtilis since it lacks an appropriate ribosome binding site for Gram-positive bacteria. Neo translation could be reactivated by coupling its initiation to the translational termination of the highly expressed beta-lactamase gene (penP) from B. licheniformis. This initiation occur...

In this expository paper we show how one can, in a uniform way, calculate the weight distributions of some well-known binary cyclic codes. The codes are related to certain families of curves, and the weight distributions are related to the distribution of the number of rational points on the curves.

Radio pulsar observations can be used to test aspects of general relativity from equivalence principle violations to binary orbital effects in the strong-field regime. This article summarizes the status of such tests at the start of the meeting, and describes two new tests made possible by recent observations of well-known binary pulsar systems.

Unlike adult damage, neonatal damage to the inferior prefrontal convexity (IC) in monkeys spares learning and performance on the delayed nonmatching-to-sample (DNMS) task ( Málková et al. 2000). We investigated whether this sparing was due to compensation by undamaged orbital frontal cortex (O), an area also critical for DNMS, by comparing combined IC and O damage (Neo-ICO) with damage to O alo...

The vitamin A of the euphausiid crustacean, Meganyctiphanes norvegica, consists almost wholly of the hindered cis isomer, neo-b (11-cis). In this animal vitamin A is concentrated almost entirely in the eyes; and its properties so closely resemble those of pure neo-b vitamin A as not in themselves to indicate that any other isomer is present. However, Fisher et al. (1955 b) have isolated a small...

The main objective of this article is to reflect on how the right health framework may be used tackle non-communicable diseases in era neo-liberalism Uganda. NCDs, also known as chronic or lifestyle diseases, cause many deaths. risk factors for NCDs include harmful use alcohol, physical inactivity, salt intake, tobacco use, raised blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, well ambient and household ai...

Speciesists believe that membership in a particular species is morally relevant. Morally relevant properties entitle their possessors to have their interests considered preferentially relative to those individuals who lack that property. Those dispensing consideration incur obligations or, minimally, options, to act with bias. As a matter of fact, all known speciesists are human speciesists, no...

Earlier cross-cultural research on replicability of the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) suggested that personality trait structure is universal, but a recent study using an Italian translation has challenged this position. The present article reexamines the psychometric properties of the Italian NEO-PI-R and discusses the importance of orthogonal Procrustes rotation when the replic...
