KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE The patient developed multiple bone metastases following mastectomy with silicone reconstruction and contralateral augmentation for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) of the breast. She was diagnosed with contralateral invasive cancer. Distant metastasis of DCIS is rare, and other metastatic origins must be screened. However, screening of augmented breasts is difficult.
INTRODUCTION Skin-sparing mastectomy (SSM) and immediate breast reconstruction (IBR) remain technically challenging in very large breasted women, often requiring extensive skin reduction, with a high incidence of post-operative complications. We report our retrospective experience (1999-2007) with SSM and Wise pattern skin reduction in IBR, and examine factors contributing to recipient site pos...
BACKGROUND Nipple-areola complex (NAC) sparing mastectomy (NSM) is mostly indicated in patients with small-/medium-sized and non-ptotic breasts, while skin-reducing mastectomy is used in patients with medium or large breasts with severe ptosis. NAC location on the reconstructed breast is one of the major factors in determining the final aesthetic result and patients' satisfaction. An optimum re...
Some studies emphasized that anatomic mechanisms of vertebral aberrations could be associated with large breasts. The effect of mammaplasty operation on the vertebral column and body posture seems to be beneficial; in this trial, it was planned to investigate the objective radiologic effect of reduction mammaplasty on the posture of the vertebral column in a group of patients operated due to th...
BACKGROUND Film mammography has limited sensitivity for the detection of breast cancer in women with radiographically dense breasts. We assessed whether the use of digital mammography would avoid some of these limitations. METHODS A total of 49,528 asymptomatic women presenting for screening mammography at 33 sites in the United States and Canada underwent both digital and film mammography. A...
BACKGROUND Breast density and mammographic tumor features of breast cancer may carry prognostic information. The potential benefit of using the combined information obtained from breast density, mammographic tumor features, and pathological tumor characteristics has not been extensively studied. PURPOSE To investigate how mammographic tumor features relate to breast density and pathological t...
Increased mammographic breast density is associated with a 4-6-fold increased risk of breast cancer, yet lifestyle factors that can reduce dense breasts are yet to be identified, and viable prevention strategies to reduce breast density-associated breast cancer development are yet to be developed. We investigated the associations of breast tissue receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB (RANK) p...

The present study investigated the relative contribution of four characteristics to attractiveness of the female body: waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), breasts, buttocks and thighs. Using a program for computer animation (DAZ 3D) 81 female figures were generated. Figures were created as combinations of 4 characteristics 3 equidistant sizes (small, medium and large). Participants (N=260) of both gend...
