We study multiple exciton generation (MEG) in two series of chemically treated PbSe nanocrystal (NC) films. We find that the average number of excitons produced per absorbed photon varies between 1.0 and 2.4 (+/-0.2) at a photon energy of approximately 4E(g) for films consisting of 3.7 nm NCs and between 1.1 and 1.6 (+/-0.1) at hnu approximately 5E(g) for films consisting of 7.4 nm NCs. The var...

Planar waveguide devices based on silicon-on-sapphire are emerging as a bridge between mid-infrared (IR) and near-IR wavelength through frequency conversion process. We analyze the limits of indirect detection of mid-IR signals by wavelength conversion in such waveguides and investigate signal-to-noise ratio improvement that is attainable with respect to direct detection using state of the art ...

Selenophosphate synthetase, the Escherichia coli selD gene product, is a 37-kDa protein that catalyzes the synthesis of selenophosphate from ATP and selenide. In the absence of selenide, ATP is converted quantitatively to AMP and two orthophosphates in a very slow partial reaction. A monophosphorylated enzyme derivative containing the gamma-phosphoryl group of ATP has been implicated as an inte...

A flow injection system for the determination of selenium by electrochemical hydride generation and quartz tube atomic absorption spectrometry is described. The generator consists of an electrolytic flow-through cell with a concentric arrangement and a packed cathode made of particulated lead. The influences of sample flow rate, carrier gas flow rate and electrolysis current on the hydrogen sel...

Dendrite-like cobalt selenide nanostructures were synthesized from cobalt and selenium powder precursors by a solvothermal method in anhydrous ethylenediamine. The as-prepared nanocrystalline cobalt selenide was found to possess peroxidase-like activity that could catalyze the reaction of peroxidase substrates in the presence of H2O2. A spectrophotometric method for uric acid (UA) determination...

The recent discovery of intercalated iron-selenide superconductors [1] has stirred up the condensed-matter community accustomed to the proximity of the superconducting and magnetic phases in various cuprate and pnictide superconductors. Never before has a superconducting state with a transition temperature as high as 30 K been found to coexist with such an exceptionally strong antiferromagnetis...

Administration of selenium in humans has anticarcinogenic effects. However, the boundary between cancer-protecting and toxic levels of selenium is extremely narrow. The mechanisms of selenium toxicity need to be fully understood. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, selenite in the millimolar range is well tolerated by cells. Here we show that the lethal dose of selenite is reduced to the micromolar ra...
