Forming lumped states in a Markov chain is a very useful device leading to a coarser level of description. The Markov chain on these lumped states is often taken as an approximation for the time evolution of the unlumped chain. In the present work we derive a bound on the error in this approximation.

A transmission line model for capacitors is proposed and developed. The model relates electrical parameters to geometrical parameters, leading to simple design rules for power applications. In contrast, design rules based on lumped RLC models are shown to lead to design errors. Experimental results match a simulation based on the distributed model whereas a lumped model gives erroneous predicti...

This paper summarizes the results of a joint analytical and experimental investigation of a new class of resonant microsensors. The key feature f these devices is that they exploit vibration localization in a set of functionalized, frequency mistuned microbeam resonators, each coupled to a ommon shuttle mass, to facilitate the detection of multiple analytes using a single sensor input and a sin...

The Reproducing Kernel Particle Method (RKPM) is a discretization technique for partial di erential equations that uses the method of weighted residuals to produce either \mesh-free" or \mesh-full" methods. The technique employs classical reproducing kernel theory and incorporates modi ed kernels to account for inconsistencies arising from the (unavoidable) introduction of discrete integration ...

This report presents a new way to model and identify single-link flexible arms when Coulomb friction is present in the joint. In order to isolate the effects of this nonlinearity, the arm model is divided into two submodels: motor and beam. The two anm coupled through the torque at the base of the beam. A systematic method is developed to obtain the dynamics of a lumped-mass flexible beam, and ...

This paper presents a method for the dynamic modeling of parallel robots with flexible links and rigid moving platform based on finite element theory. The relation between elastic displacements of links is investigated, taking into consideration the coupling effects of elastic motion and rigid motion. The kinematic and dynamic constraint conditions of elastic displacements of flexible parallel ...

This paper investigates the effect of various modifications to an acoustic steel string guitar on lowfrequency dynamics and sound pressure level. Modifications include string tension, sound-hole area and depth, bridge pin mass, top plate mass, stiffness and damping. Frequency response measurements are provided for all modifications considered. A lumped parameter model is found to capture the ch...

This paper reports the design, modeling and fabrication of a novel MEMS device for low-frequency, low-g vibration energy harvesting. The new design is based on bi-stable buckled beam structure. To implement the design at MEMS scale, we further proposed to employ residual stress in micro-fabricated thin films. With an electromechanical lumped model, the multi-layer beam could be designed to achi...

This paper proposes a hybrid numerical method (HNM) to solve the inverse kinematics of a class of spatial flexible manipulators modeled b y mass/spring (mass-lumped stations and masslessspring fields) modeling method. HNM includes two parts: one is an implicit recursive numerical method (IRNM) which is used to f ind a better approximate solution to the inverse problem, the other is a global ite...
