Let R be a local Cohen-Macaulay ring with canonical module ωR. We investigate the following question of Huneke: If the sequence of Betti numbers {β i (ωR)} has polynomial growth, must R be Gorenstein? This question is well-understood when R has minimal multiplicity. We investigate this question for a more general class of rings which we say are homologically of minimal multiplicity. We provide ...

In this paper we introduce some monomial orders for the class of closed path polyominoes and prove that set generators polyomino ideal attached to a forms reduced Gröbner basis with respect these orders. It is known containing an $L$-configuration or ladder at least three steps, equivalently having no zig-zag walks, prime. As consequence, obtain coordinate ring walks normal Cohen-Macaulay domain.

We study rings of integral modular forms for congruence subgroups as modules over the ring full group. In many cases these are free or decompose at least into well-understood pieces. apply this to characterize which Cohen--Macaulay and prove finite generation results. These theorems based on decomposition results about vector bundles compactified moduli stack elliptic curves.

Recently, Takahashi established a new approximation theory for finitely generated modules over commutative Noetherian rings, which unifies the spherical approximation theorem due to Auslander and Bridger and the Cohen–Macaulay approximation theorem due to Auslander and Buchweitz. In this paper we generalize these results to much more general case over non-commutative rings. As an application, w...

Let G be a nite group, F a eld whose characteristic p divides the order of G and A G the invariant ring of a nite-dimensional FG-module V. In analogy to modular representation theory we deene for any subgroup H G the (relative) trace-ideal A G H /A G to be the image of the relative trace map t G X is always a proper ideal of A G ; in fact, we show that its height is bounded above by the codimen...

This paper contains two essentially independent results in the invariant theory of finite groups. First we prove that, for any faithful representation of a non-trivial p-group over a field of characteristic p, the ring of vector invariants of m copies of that representation is not Cohen-Macaulay for m ≥ 3. In the second section of the paper we use Poincaré series methods to produce upper bounds...

We associate to every equicharacteristic zero Noetherian local ring R a faithfully flat ring extension which is an ultraproduct of rings of various prime characteristics, in a weakly functorial way. Since such ultraproducts carry naturally a non-standard Frobenius, we can define a new tight closure operation on R by mimicking the positive characteristic functional definition of tight closure. T...

Formulas are obtained in terms of complete reductions for the bigraded components of local cohomology modules of bigraded Rees algebras of 0-dimensional ideals in 2-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings. As a consequence, cohomological expressions for the coefficients of the Bhattacharya polynomial of such ideals are obtained.

Introduction. The aim of this article is to show how one may use interesting properties of the canonical module for computational applications. It seems that the ideas we develop here are not used in computational algebraic geometry today. We do not claim any major improvement on the theoretical complexity of the problems we address, however we have the feeling that this alternative approach fo...

Cohomology rings of various classes of groups have curious duality properties expressed in terms of their local cohomology [2, 3, 12, 4, 5, 6]. We formulate a purely algebraic form of this duality, and investigate its consequences. It is obvious that a Cohen-Macaulay ring of this sort is automatically Gorenstein, and that its Hilbert series therefore satisfies a functional equation, and our mai...
